www.defra.gov.uk/planth/pestnote/newram.pdf I found this link I was looking for information about this Phytophora disease that was reported on Cannock Chase it shows symptoms so it might come in handy. What I did find out though is that if you cut the plant down the disease doesn't travel into the roots so it could come again! it would probably take quite a while though so I suppose its as well to through it out although you might have to be careful how you dispose of it!

Hi Maggy I read your useful link, it doesnt seem to be what our rhododendron died of. There was no discolouration on its leaves, in fact it looked healty, it was coverered in new flower buds. The only reason we knew it was dead was when strong wind snapped one of the branches and we then checked and all the branches were dead. I hope whatever it is doesnt spread to the rest of our plants.
