Watch out for Vine Weevil Grubs that could be introduced into your garden via infected plants from Bootsales, Garden Centres or kindly friends-- These are the Grubs-- --These are the Adults- I always use Pravdo Vine Weevil Killer solution in the soil to kill any grubs around. They are partial to Fuchsia and Container Plants. They lay their eggs around August/September time and the Grubs grow until Spring--then they feed on the roots of the plant.

Thats Spookey Biggs before I tell everyone what I found to-day I thought I would read the last 35 posts!!!!!!!!!! I was sorting in the greenhouse this afternoon and thought I would pull the leaves off a Cyclamen and put it under the bench! the top came away and underneath was all soggy with all these what I thought were Maggots Ill put them on the garden for the birds I thought! then when I came in I looked up pests and disceases in my favourates (Help they are Vine Weavel Lavae) I was straight outside with a handrake and my garden gloves squidging them I hope Ive got te lot! Now I need to get that Pravdo as soon as poss as that plant was in the Conservatory untill about a month ago and there are other plants in there! Thanks for the tip Ive never seen the grubs before to-day but I have had to wash a couple of plant roots before and repot as I caught a couple of adults.

The Birds will love them--If you just tip them out onto a tray or something similar --they cant survive unless in the soil-- The Vine Weevil Pravdo is expensive--although you can buy it in small pkts and mix it with water--but the bottle (which I usually buy) is about £6 but worth it because you can mix and use as you need --it lasts quite a long time. If you have them in your greenhouse - I would replace soil/compost with Fresh compost and Bin the infected compost--not on the compost heap! The trouble is you dont know they are there until the damage is done.

They werent in the compost Biggs they were in a plant! well the larvae was the leaves werent eaten at all just the coam! I think the weavel was in the Conservatory when it laid the larvae if you say they lay at the end of the summer. That means the Lemon Tree and a couple of other plants will need watering with Pravdo! its worth getting if it doesnt go off.

Maggy I would check all your plants and compost just incase, better to be safe than sorry. Biggles Thanks for the reminder, every year I usually replace my compost in the troughs with fresh compost and each time have found the Larve, not being sure what they are I just squish them then refill the troughs. - This year though as most books /mags say I was just going to top up the compost I'm not going to now even if it takes a bit more time to finish the job.

If you find any in Soil/Compost Dont use that same compost - Bin It because the Eggs are so small and you could miss even one--which equals 1 Adult!! and if you are tempted to put it on the Compost Heap- thenyou would be spreading them round the garden. The Adult Weevil looks similar to friendly beetles but the difference is the Vine Weevil is Slow moving whereas the other beetles move fairly fast. Happy Hunting!

Thanks Biggs I can't bear the thought of binning compost - maybe I will get some Pravado. As for the adults I know them well And they get squished quick smart. ;D

I love my Fuchsias and so do these horrible things-- they also like Rhododendrons and Azaleas aswell-- I too wasn't sure about them until a few years ago when I read an article about them--I remembered it did say they like Containers best! Some gardeners put a smear of Vaseline round the rim of the Container because it acts like a barrier and they cant cross this- Perhaps instead of Binning the Compost-spreading it on a sheet in the garden for the Birds to 'clean' up -and then a dose of Pravdo-- I mentioned these because they could be brought into the garden via--bought plants even from the Garden Centres so it is best to check the soil before repotting them--Bigs
