We have one in our garden - poor thing, we planted it and sort of left it! I have cleared some of the large bushes from around it today (the label says plant in full sun), and pruned it lightly. I intend to clear more of the stuff away and give it a good feed & some tlc. How far should I go with the pruning do you think - the flowers (only a few last year) were right at the top and it was about 2' over the fence with only 2 large main stems. Many thanks for any advice - I don't want to give up on it.

I am a bit late in finding this but--if you haven't already done the pruning then if it were mine-- I would prune it right back to about 2ft from the ground, cut any old, brown, stems just above an outward facing bud (so the new growth faces outwards) Remove any dead stems. Giving it a good haircut will do it the world of good and now is the time to do this (but not on a Frosty day ;D) If there is any sign of Black spot on the leaves -pick/cut these off and burn or bin them. Clean the soil round the root area and give it a mulch or Fertillizer -dont let it touch the stem of the plant. You will probally get bigger and better flowers--

It certainly needs some fresh soil and fertiliser anyway.
