Has anyone any advice on growing Chillies from seed outside as I haven't got a Greenhouse? I did have a go at growing them outside last year Riddles, but it was a rubbish summer wasn't it? And nothing came of them. Have you got room for one of those cheap bookcase type plastic zippy greenhouses, they are really good if you've got somewhere to anchor them down. i gave one to my sister in Law and it, spin tardis like over her fence in a high wind! Her garden is mainly crazy paving!

Hi riddles I would grow them on your kitchen windowsill and only put them out in about the middle of June by then they should be o.k. Ive grown them in a cold greenhouse but started them inside.

Dont forget photographs on their progress- Are you going to try any other unusal veg/exotic plants such as Banana etc. You can also invest in a 'Cloche' when you harden them off ready for the Summer outside.--Bigs

Hi, I have planted a few different types of peppers/chillies seeds today indoors so I will keep you posted-Cheers. I've grown both chillies and peppers in the past without a greenhouse but, as emsey says, they did no good last year (well at least mine didn't) not helped at all by the number of slugs that were around. I am going to have another go this year, but haven't got round to sowing them yet!

Someone I know had put the seeds in compost in the airing cupboard on 4th jan. and they germinated 9th january . They moved them out of the airing cupboard when they saw a speck of green. They then placed them on the kitchen window sill where they've been growing very slowly since then.

I start mine off in jiffy tube, the ones that come as a flat dics, you wet them and the expand, during Feb. Though I have no done mine yet. Normally I grow them in a green house of conservatory, but I can not see why they should not grow OK out side. Though as they are not frost hardy, keep them sheltered, like a window sill until the danger of frost has past (late May). You may not get red ones, but don't worry, they are like tomatoes and can go red while stored. Some of mine have. ;D

I have planted 3 types, one is chilli pyramid. They went in on 2 feb so as soon as anything pops out I'll let you know. I may try those flat discs you talk about, I often wondered if they are worth investing in. I find a good method is to soak seeds overnight first. cheers

How are the chillies all coming along? I sowed mine back in January, they went into the airing cupboard and germinated within a couple of days. They're now in my covered back yard and have about 6 leaves on them. They were saved seeds. I'm also growing pepper plants, did last year as well. I only managed to get a couple of peppers off them but it was a wet summer and they were outside for most of it. It will be good to see how we all do this year.

Hi, Sorry for the late reply- When I am home from work sitting at the computer is not a priority...I prefer to be outside! The chillies and peppers are quite slow actually. I have had them outside is a sheltered spot uncovered for the last 4 weeks now. I think this has slowed them down and it has hardened them off. They got off to a good start maybe too quick. This weekend I plan to re pot. let me know how you are getting on with yours. Neil.
