Fothergills have brought out a new one, Scarlet Empire, which they say is an improved form of Emperor - if I see any the weekend I could be tempted, I'll let you know ;D

Painted Lady is probably my favourite being the only variety with red and white flowers. It's a very old variety you know Victorian I think.

I know, that's why I like it and although it isn't a fantastically heavy cropper, it's enough for us really.

Right, I am doing my 'trenches' they're just holes really, one up each post of the swing. I'm going to sow 4 in pots and 4 in site, so I should have some seeds if anyone needs them? When I've bought them that is.

I've been to B&Q this morning and they had root trainers on the reduced shelf - 32 'cells' for £7. Earmarked for the beans (and some more sweet peas as well).

I'm growing Sunset Improved this year but I'm not going to sow them until next month as I have run out of room on my window sills and in my 2 mini greenhouses outside! Sunset Improved are supposed to be stringless but we'll see. I'm growing them in the ground this year because I grew my runners in a pot last year and it kept blowing over and in the end they were in such a muddle I gave up with them. I've never grown runners from seed - my Dad always used to give me some of his plants and last year a friend did so this is a first.

Having had my tub of sweetpeas and runner beans keep blowing over last year I wondered if a few bricks in the bottom of the tub would help weight it down. My sweetpeas have had to go in a tub again this year so I am experimenting!

Sunset Improved is supposed to be almost stringless Emsey which is what made me choose that variety although I am a bit worried abou the 'almost' bit.
