I will be growing two varieties, planted tomorrow in the hope that I have earlier flowers. Varieties - Cupani and Old Spice Mixed Planted in - J.I. soil based seed compost and in cardboard toilet roll centres to save root disturbance. The compost is in the tubes warming up in the kitchen as it has been outside, and I have never tried using the rolls before, so we will see how I get on.

Oh Thanks BM for reminding me about getting those Sweetpeas started off. I will have to keep those cardboard toilet rolls for them. How many seed do you put in each Loo Roll does it matter if I put two or three seed in at once? I will be 'soaking' the seed for 24hrs before hand to help them on their way.

I am going to put two in each one but having never used cardboard rolls before I'm not sure how I will get on! At the moment they are a little wet and looking at me each time I go into the kitchen, hope they don't disintegrate too soon! On the packets I have it says that there is no ned to soak the seed, I didn't last year but didn't start them off until Mar/April time. I won't soak them this year but if you do yours, then perhaps we can compare them?

I grew 'proper' peas in cardboard tubes last year, they worked well, just make sure you cover the tube up when you plant out as the blistering hot sun will suck any moisture out of the whole tube if any is exposed. Some people put a tea bag in the bottom of each tube for some extra goodness. I found 6 tubes fitted nicely into a empty fruit punnet.

I always stand mine in modular trays, the kind you buy annuals in in garden centres, (when the cardboard tube goes mouldy, dont worry about it, its not a problem). They do dry out quickly at the top, but as the roots quickly go to the bottom thats not a problem either, I do bury them quite deeply when it comes to planting out, though, as Emsey is right, they do "wick" the water out of the surrounding soil, if exposed.

I'm sowing a few today, they are from some pods I collected last year. I'll have too keep them in the cold greenhouse. I can see some coming up in the garden already so I'm sure they'll be fine in the GH. Last year I started my seeds off in Oct, by April they were a tangled mess (I forgot to pinch them out) Then they were gobbled up by the hens within 20mins of being planted out! So I learnt a few lessons last year

Thanks everyone - I hadn't watered them maggyd when I took the photograph, the wetness was just from the compost!
I've had a quick look round for a tray Sweetleaf but am supposed to getting the tree down & doing housework, will have another look later.

I've found a copule of trays Sweetleaf, so they are now in there - the tubes are slightly smaller than each module but they are better supported - thanks!
I have also moved them out of the conservatory and into the back bedroom for the time being, as although there is heating in the conservatory, it is going very cold in there at night.

I have just replied to your post --But I have 'lost' it somewhere!! The cold wont do them any harm, Quite alot of people sow them outside (in the soil) at this time of year. It toughens them up! Dont forget to 'pinch' the tops off when they are about 4" Ht to encourage side shoots.

Thanks Biggles, once they have appeared they are going to be put into the coldframe as I know they don't need mollycoddling then, but I was a bit wary until they have germinated.

Now All bigs did was 'plonk' them in the soil, sprinkled chicken pellets around and let them grow!--Oh I did remember to pinch them out before I did that-- I will post a photograph of last years -- They grew much thicker than this photograph shows and produced loads of flowers right up until September.

I sowed some in October that were doing very well and had been pinched out. I moved them out of the greenhouse a few weeks ago during a mild spell to halt their growth..............I've been up the garden today and they were still outside, not looking very happy! I have moved them back in the greenhouse, but that was a really severe frost last night, so I'm not sure if they will survive. I have loads more seeds and intend a spring sowing anyway.

I certainly am Em ;D my F.I.L. always gave me my S.P plants and since he died 4 years ago I havent grown them partly because they wouldnt get picked when Im away and they will just go to seed and another I dont really know where Im going to find space for them! in my experience they never do much in a pot!! Ive just been reading on the BBC board and most people there sowed the seeds in October! were you one of them? the greenhouse bit rang a bell ;D

Maggs--October sowing is fine if you want them to flower in May/June. but I usually sow about Feb/March (less chance of Slug/Snail damage over Winter) and they do catch up with the earlier sown ones. I dont grow them for 'Showing' just for pleasure!
