I am sorry The witch, I am not a fan of Waste Disposal Units. All our food scraps end up on top of the compost pile where animals and birds take what they want, leaving the rest to be re-cycled in our compost. The thought of all those good nutrients being flushed away through the sewers and (in our case) out to sea, doesn't bear thinking about!

The idea of the extra bin for food scraps is to stop rotting food going into landfill sites where it lets of dangerous gases. Yes, we do. We don't have landfill sites any more - they are not environmentally friendly. Waste Disposal Units are not encouraged by our Government. See this page: www.reducerubbish.govt.nz/problem/how-much.htmland what they say is: Putting your kitchen scraps down the waste disposal unit doesn't make them go away - all you're doing is shifting the disposal problem to someone else. Compost your scraps instead.

I think this is just another excuse by the Government to put council tax up, if you ask me! We need to stop being a throwaway society and fix more things, so they don't end up in these sites. I remember when I was 19ish and my alternator had gone in my car. The garage wanted to replace it, but a work colleague re bushed it for me, which cost me a couple of quid for the parts. He did it for me as a favour in his lunch break.

Keith, re: your Don't the gulls and foxes get to it first, before it rots? We don't see seagulls this far inland and foxes are not one of our introduced species. However, there are possums, but they only eat the best fruit from the trees Really, we have very little in the way of cooked food scraps as we have small meals and eat pretty much everything - nothing much gets wasted!

In the old days the family pig and chickens got all the scraps didn't they? You are not allowed to feed animals that sort of thing these days....and very few people want to keep pigs to eat, I know! I agree with Keith, we just buy and then throw away far too much food, it's fairly shocking. I watched a programme a while back where the family were simply filling their bins every week with uneaten food (and all the packaging)....and they wondered why their food bills were so high! Sometimes I think people have lost the ability to think for themselves..........I mean, it's not rocket science is it? To buy only the foods that you will actually consume seems to be beyond the wit of a lot of people......and to compost any waste is way over their heads!

I hate waste too, and I'm getting more and more fed up with packaging to the point that I'm thinking of just using the local greengrocers, butchers etc to avoid it - it's shameful! Un loading my shopping trolley on to the conveyor belt and seeing all that plastic, it really does get to my conscience.

The hens get all of our food scraps not that we get many, I cant understand how people can be silly enough to buy food then throw it away without even cooking it, how wastefull. Even when we had a problem with the freezer I threw very little away, had a big cookoff

But what about rats Roan? We don't have a problem with rats The witch! If a rat had to rely on the scraps we throw out, it would be pretty emaciated! ;D We do get field mice, which provide good sport for Mushi and her mates Derek, Whitey and Sylvester etc.
