In my new (hopefully) extended vegetable garden I am going to reserve an area for Dahlias. I want to plant some flower areas all over it but I would love one totally OTT and exhuberant Dahlia bed. I know Cheery grows Dahlias from seed very successfully(she gave me some Bishops Children which are still growing every year) but I know nothing about Dahlias really - which are the best ones to grow from seed please? I prefer the open petal ones rather than the pompom types but any colours would be fine with me..

I'm not sure that the best ones are from seed.
I think that you have to buy tubers.

Incidentally 4P - this is my idea. You've pinched it...

I'm always growing them from seed and must admit to liking Bishops Children, for obvious reasons! I also grew some dwarf one, but I'm soon going out, so will give you the variety later! On me light atm. Just go to a G/C and pick whatever takes your fancy 4P, then have a great time sowing, come the early spring! They are not exactly hard to sow and I normally get far more than I need! Think how many plants you could get from a packet of seeds and a little compost, compared to one tuber! Have fun!

Don't agree with you Keith.
The best ones are named varieties from tubers.

Don't agree with you Keith. The best ones are named varieties from tubers. Now, did I say the sown ones were 'better' than the ones from tubers? Don't think I did!

How long from seed sowing to flowering I wonder compared with tubers which will flower the same year. They flower the same year they are sowed, The witch.

I think they're beautiful, especially in a group with all kinds of varieties and colours - but we can't grow them, the slugs or snails eat them to pieces.

Have you thought about dotting a few grasses about, as in the winter, it's going to look a bit bare?
