We only have a small garden...apart from all the insect-attracting plants I already grow in the flower border like hyssop, monarda etc..I am thinking of trying a few small shrubs. Any ideas? British natives all seem so large...the idea is to bring in more insects and feed the birds. (the cat is locked indoors from around 8pm-6am which would give the birds a fighting chance in the summer)

Viburnum Opulus 'Compactum' springs to mind, straight away. How about cotoneasters or Berberis? What is the largish you would want, cheery? Pyracantha on the fences would be good. Next door have sparrows nesting in theirs.

Cotoneaster, Lavenders, Cotton Lavender, Hyssop, Artemsia (Powys Castle), Dwarf Rosemary, Myrtle, Sweet Box (doesn't mind pruning), Skimmia ( did I get you one of those?) - anything herby but woody is good and none of them grow too big..
