Having frogs and newts in the pond I should know this - I've just covered the pond with netting to stop any more leaves going in for the Winter. It's a small wildlife pond and there's a lot of wildlife in there! How careful should I be at covering the pond? What I mean is, are there frogs or newts at this time of year going back and forth from the pond into the garden? I remember leaving a big gap at one end of the pond last year between the pond and the netting, just in case there was something trying to find a way out.

If you have some 'mud' at the bottom of the pond, some frogs mainly males, will want to 'hibernate' down there in winter, usually about November time, so yes make sure they can get in and out easily. Something I should say as well, on a similar note, is that while I was hacking at the ivy the other day, guess what was 6ft up in the under/over growth? Yes, a frog and what a fright it gave me too. Luckily I missed with me pruners! I even checked him all over to be on the safe side!

Oh bless! He's probably been using that as his Summer residence for years. Do you think he came from your pond?
