I nipped into a gardening shop to buy some new gloves for work and there was a wheelbarrow full of clean large hessian sacks they were giving away! I nabbed 3 (didn't want to appear greedy)..I know what I'm going to use one of them for but any suggestions for the others? (Sensible as well as silly no doubt....)

Fill with sheep daggings and hang in a barrel of rain-water to make liquid feed.

Plant protection, storing potatoes, moving shrubs with, etc. Edit. Just found this, while watching a few frames of snooker.. * Storage of potatoes and vegetables. (Sack allows the vegetables to breathe) * Frost protection for plants. (Wrap loosely around plant to protect from cold.) * Protection for brick walls and cementing. * The protection of root balls, when moving plants. * Collection of autumn leaves. * The storage and protection of garden tools. * Use as sand bags. * Ideal For Children’s Potato Sack Race Taken from this site. I've thought of another one. Cutting them up (good grief) and using them as containers for pond plants or liners for pond containers that have bigger than normal holes. Can't believe I didn't think of that one before!

Good, good......I just spoke to the Eco teacher about using them to line some big pond planters, and then filling them up with pebbles to make steps in and out of the pond at school. I think they are more stable....and I shall maybe cut some into little pieces to put in clay pots and poke into the habitat tower..... Keep thinking..........

That's a good one! I am peculiarly thrilled about these sacks being free....it's daft! I love hessian sacks, for some reason but are they really as wonderful as I think?? They are big too with patterns on them.....lovely

It's a shame to cut them up - what about collecting kindling in them for the fire? It would dry out well in them I'd imagine.

I'm going back to the shop on Friday to hopefully grab some more.....could this be why I have a house full of clutter? Everything has a use eventually...............good idea about the kindling too.. I don't think OH would be keen on me collecting muck in one though. He thinks I'm very peculiar about poo anyway...I have a big bin full of rabbit mess by the back patio atm.......

It's all a matter of taste - you know what they say about one man's treasure.......

There you go - fill one with the rabbit poo, tie it to a stick, and hang it in a rainwater butt.

OOO! Mum's just seen the sacks and says she has an old horn peg for rugmaking! She says her Mum used to use hessian sacks as the base - so I'm going to have a bash at rag rug making too! I am definitely getting some more.....I need them....

Linings for hanging baskets? That is a good one, though around here, they would be decimated by the sparrows, for nesting material! Can you be sure there will be any left, come Friday, 4P?

If I were you 4p I'd have a word with the manager and tell them about the work you do and ask if he'd save all the sacks for you! Imagine an unlimited supply, who know what else he may chuck your way!

Blimey, 4P. If you're like this with hessian sacks what would you be like if you won the lottery...

I am quite easily pleased you know........ Cheery feels it is HER destiny to win the Lottery, so I just fantasise about it. She's being a bit tardy about it though.....
