My clients and I are off to a local hospice on Friday morning to do some gardening. Sadly we are digging up a beautiful hedge of Viburnum tinus, just as it comes into flower, to make way for a flower bed. I really hate having to do this but I don't have a choice so I wondered about trying to salvage as much as possible. Has anyone moved a Viburnum successfully? The hedge is about 4ft tall and is very close planted. My clients are being let loose with loppers to take all the top growth off first. Then we will tackle the roots...does anyone think I have any hope of saving any of it? I shall take some big plastic bags to wrap round the root balls......any other advice please?

When the clients lop them down, ask them to leave some leaves on all shoots of the plants you want to keep. If it hasn't rained, I would water before lifting the rootball and take as much as is possible. Straight into the black plastic bags and they should be OK. Just to add, I have had success with taking cuttings at this time of year, so keep some of the prunings and give it a go. Good luck

Cuttings? Aha! Good idea FC! Do you stick them in the ground or in pots?

Cuttings? Aha! Good idea FC! Do you stick them in the ground or in pots? I did them in pots, fairly sandy compost. If you can provide bottom heat it helps, if not they will be fine in a sheltered position or in your polytunnel. I'm pretty sure I took mine with a heel, just tore them (gently) off of the main stem and remove the lower leaves.
