No, sorry Emsey I haven't ever considered buying something like that though...I think it's much better to wipe them with a damp cloth personally. As you say they are porous so I don't think it's a great idea to actually wash them. That's only my view though obviously!

I thought that there is a protective coating on the outside of egg shells, which if washed off will cause eggs to go bad very quickly. That's called the egg box The witch. When you have your own hens you don't get that.

I wash them in warm water - I never realized it could do them any damage. I've never had any problems just doing that though. There must be smaller egg cleaners Emsey I would think, but wouldn't they just do the same?

Ooo that's good, I'm not going far wrong then. Thanks Keith, that's an interesting link. We don't have to bother collecting ours 3 times a day since we're getting on average 1 a day atm, out of 5 of them.

I don't know what happened to the eggs we got from the farm, when I was a kid, but as it was done on a large scale, free range mind, I expect they did something. I remember my Mum washing them in warm water when they came home, but other than that, I don't know/remember. Oh and when I say large scale, I don't mean commercial, just enough for the big house and for the people that worked there!

Maybe I'll do what 4P does then. wiping them with a damp cloth - that's if they grace us with any eggs in the first place.

I think the machine steams the eggs, not washes them. I suppose I'm to too posh to just wipe the eggs Now its getting colder we are getting a few eggs less per week about 16ish. I've started to give the girls a bit of instant mash to warm them up in the mornings
