...has been pathetic this year The tomatoes all died and so did the parsley [which hopefully will come back next year]. I don't know if it was due to the weather conditions or what? We have had hardly any sunshine or even warmth this year...although we watered the plants regularly. Has this happened to anyone else here

We've had glorious sunshine and blue skies all year. We always do. The temperate Birmingham climate is something to do with the fact that the Birmingham Shropshire canal is affected by the Gulf Stream

Our tomatoes were rubbish as well this year Goth. I don't know why it happens but it seems that some years certain crops fail to cut the mustard!.
Last year our pea crop was pathetic altho this year they were abundant...the year before last the beans didn't grow well, last year they were very successful and again this year my bean crop is very disappointing..
2009 will, of course...be tomatotastic.....

My greenhouse Tomatoes did well but took a long time to ripen. They were taking up so much room, I picked off the green Tomatoes on the vine and spread on a tray in the greenhouse to make room for the tender plants I wanted to put inside. Yesterday I had so many ripe tomatoes I cooked them all to make a puree. I froze them in ice cubes and have today transferred them to a bag in the freezer to be used individually. The outdoor toms were hit by blight I did pick off the unaffected fruits, but they all turned brown before ripening.

Oh, absolutely WOW elsie, they're fantastic! We ended up composting our one aubergine plant and our two tomato plants brought home from school, but we can't grumble - we got at least three lovely tomatoes from them.

Exemplary as ever Elsie! But I think it gives the rest of us something to aim for My PT has been quite productive really despite being somewhat neglected due to lack of time - tomatoes, melons, cucumbers and aubergines did pretty well considering the weather but the extreme dampness has done some damage in the last month. I actually stopped watering the PT about 6 weeks ago but still the tomatoes have split and dropped off the vines - I have wasted loads sadly. I wanted to bottle the plum tomatoes but they went all soggy just as they ripened enough...still Hilda, my old chicken, has been having a great time in there!

Its the first time I've grown toms in a green house, and they didn't do well at all, the outdoor ones were much better. I tried aubergines for the second time this year, got a few nice flowers and nothing else, the same happened last year! I've opened up the gh to my hens now too, but I have to keep reminding them they can go in there!
