My daughter's taking her Gardener Badge at Brownies and amongst the things to do to get the badge is this; 'Grow four kinds of fruits, vegetables, herbs or annual flowers from seed or bulb.Transplant the seedlings then tend and train them as necessary. Discuss with the tester how you will use what has grown.' Any ideas what she can still plant this time of year please? We don't have our allotment now otherwise I'd be more genned up but I think from the packets of seeds we have left there are some that can be planted in the Autumn, but all ideas gratefully accepted! THANKS

A pot of: Japanese onions/Garlic Broad Beans Angelica/Meadowsweet (Angelia & Meadowsweet need fresh seed which should be about now) Lavender/Fennel Acorns/Rowanberries Hyacinths
Any of those fit the bill maybe? Any fresh seed from perennials can be harvested and sown now....

Fantastic 4P, thanks! That gives us loads to go on. I especially like the idea of the top two but we'll see which she fancies. I also thought of cress but that's cheating a bit really.

Do they have to complete the tasks within a certain time-frame? (Sorry, I never joined the Brownies so haven't a clue!)

I'm not sure Myrtle, and my time at Brownies lasted two whole weeks! I found the badge info in her Brownie trousers last night and we haven't even discussed it yet but hold on I've just spotted on it ; 'This badge can be tested over a period of time'. That's good then isn't it? But if she did want to get going now, as she probably will do I just wondered how much choice there's be this time of year.

I was thinking along the lines of a sweet pea - Cupani. Reasons: They could be planted Oct/Nov using the cardboard inners of toilet rolls - showing recycling and also they don't like having their roots disturbed and the cardboard can be planted with them! Cupani is the variety from which all our sweet peas today were originally cultivated from I believe - bit of history there. They can go in a cold frame over the winter - not too much molly-coddling required. Mom will hopefully have some nice cut flowers for the house next year! ;D (And planted then they flower earlier than spring sown)

Sweet peas in the toilet rolls sounds great! Thanks Myrtle. Thanks too Emsey, I've had some brillant suggestions from you all. Jessie isn't sure whether she'll be doing the badge at school, where the lady who runs the gardening club there is one of the Brownie leaders and therefore a brilliant person to do the testing, or whether she'll do it at home - she says she wants to do it at home. However we have some great ideas if she ends up doing it here, and thanks again. The witch it would be better in the Spring, I did mention that to her and it was then that she told me that it might be organized from school which in my opinion would be better as they can pick the time.......
