Lola the Hen has got a sore on the base of her foot, on the central pad, it's about 1cm in diameter and has a scab covering the centre. the pad seems slightly swollen around the area, and she is limping on it. We've tried cleaning it with a bit of salt water, but obviously it's dirty again in no time, she's still going about her business as usual. Is there anything we can use on it to help it heal? also, can we put some sort of covering on it to stop it getting dirty?

You could try dabbing iodine on it, Debi - messy but effective for raw skin wounds. I wouldn't advice covering it with anything as it just annoys them. Could you put her in a box with clean straw overnight to keep her off it a bit? Otherwise I don't think there's much you can do other than keep checking that it's getting better.

i had been advised by Practical Poultry to use Iodine, but unfortunately when my MiL went to buy some yesterday, it has been taken off the Market as it is apparantly used in Bomb making! She got a spray which is made from Povidone-Iodine which is a safe version of it, we put that on her foot last night after thoughroly washing it under running water.

Me too - sorry I didn't pitch in earlier Debi, but I would have suggested just keeping it as clean as possible with antiseptic and keeping an eye on it. How is she today? If you think she'd be happy being kept off the foot inside somewhere that'd be great, but then again you have to weigh up how stressed she'd be being separated from the other hens with how much good it would be doing her foot. Hope it heals soon.

We've been washing her foot under a tap, so as not to spread the infection, then we've been drying it and putting on a Savlon dry antiseptic spray, covering it in a plaster then putting gaffa tape over it to keep it dry. she's walking much better for it. She's pretty much a "house hen" anyway, she sleeps in the house away from the others, she lives in a small dog cage in the kitchen, she even knocks on the door when she wants to come and lay an egg or when it's bedtime, currently about 7.30. She's like a little cat or dog, she's obsessed with my MiL she follows her around everywhere. she'll even go in the living room and settle in the dog basket if we let her wonder!

Oh bless, really? I have more than an inkling that I have one or two who would do that if I let them, she sounds lovely and a real character ! It sounds like it's healing right, and you couldn't be doing any more than you're already doing.

I'm so pleased she seems to be getting better. My daughter was given 2 chickens for her birthday last year (don't ask) OH made a run, they ruined my lawn, but I really liked them. Until one of them turned out to be a Cockeral!!!! We managed to relocate the pair to my friends farm. The Cockeral is still going strong. He has about 50 hens to keep him busy. ;D

If you still have the run you could think about re-homing some ex-battery hens FC.........I'm off again guaranteed ladybirds. Glad Lola is improving
