I was really disappointed with our Busy Lizzies this year - they all started to die off in July Apparently there is a new disease that has affected Busy Lizzies and the advice is to not grow them for a year the advice is to grow begonia sempaflorens instead I am now in a quandry - I love using busy lizzies in my front garden display and although I love big begonias I am not keen on the bedding sort What shall I do?

Are they sure its a disease not just the wet weather and slugs!!! I gather it looks as if the leaves are all gone and the storks are withering. I didnt put any in at all this year as we were going away for a long time so I have no personel experience but I have read about it.

Mine have done the same. Yellowing leaves, then leaf spot and all the leaves drop. mine started in July. I posted a pic of a 'Busy Lizzie' basket on my garden thread within a couple of weeks it had keeled over. The others have followed none left now. I think the weather has paid a large part, fungal and bacterial infections thrive on this sort of damp, warm weather.

Mine aren't good either - they are in hanging baskets with ferns and shade loving plants in a very shady area of the garden. I think mine dried out too much which caused some of the withering, but there is more withering going on besides......funny thing, I have light pink ones and bright orange, and the bright orange seem much stronger plants than the light pink ones.

They mentioned the disease that's affecting the busy lizzies on GW last week didn't they? it took hold partly because of the very mild, wet winter we had followed by the rather gloomy wet summer. As you use a lot of free standing tubs and baskets in your displays Elsie, surely fresh compost would be OK? if NEXT summer is a lot more.....summerish....

CPB - I plant out about 200 busy lizzies in the front garden borders - still haven't made my mind up about what to do next year
