I realised how out of date my book was, after the Goshawk siting, I had on holiday. Even without a book, I thought it was a Goshawk. Still can't believe that one, going on holiday with no bird book packed! It's not the only time I have done that, either! I didn't think there were any Goshawks in Scotland, so how come I thought I saw one? When I got home, my book says they're aren't any in Scotland (some pairs breed in Southern England), but went to the RSPB site, which said they are there. My book, though quite a good one for identification, even seen Bill Oddie have it in his hand in one program, is well over thirty years old!! Trouble is, I can't carry the RSPB web site around with me, when I am walking in the Highlands, so any suggestions will be gratefully received. Hope this is not a daft question, coming from someone like me!! Or do I carry on as I am doing, thinking I have seen something and confirming it when I get home from the 'net? I just know I am going to get asked what do I want for Christmas soon, from various family members, so thought, how about a new bird book that is UP TO DATE!! Message to Keith. Stop watching the cricket, as it takes toooo long to write threads on AF!!!

My only bird book to identify them is the Observers Book of Birds, Keith - short and sweet. I'm sure it's not detailed enough for the birds you're seeing but small, concise and easy to pack!

How about packing a lap-top, to check your sightings at the end of each day?

This isn't a bad one either...... Sorry Mrs B, I wanted to see if that is the one that my Mum gave Stephen a few weeks ago and it is. Like you said it's not quite what I want, but thanks for the idea.

That's OK - hope you manage to find the right book Keith. Have you seen any more?
