Just a quick note, Just found dead patches on the leaves of my tomatoe plants outdoors, also black patches on the stems. I have cut off as much effected leaves as I can see. I have not ditched the plants at the moment as I hope to get the tomatoes to go red, though I will keep an eye on them and if needs be pick the tomatoes and put them into a paper bag with a banana to ripen them off. Its only to be expected, we have had a wet summer so far, and have only recently had some hot days.

Oh dear.... I haven't heard much about blight this year surprisingly. I hope you still manage to get a decent crop too LT!

I hope so too - last year I think our few tomatoes got what must have been tomato blight, going all blackish and hard. They were the plants the kids had brought back from school and nothing came of them. This year though, they brought them home and Jessie tasted her first red tomato yesterday. There aren't very many on the plant but at least there are going to be a few edible ones. It's so soul destoying seeing all your nurturing and hard work end up like that, isn't it? Hope you get a nice crop in the end LTranter.

I am so peed off. Yesterday I went and picked about 10 Tomatoes from the Garten Pearl (sp) I planted in the garden. Today, I went out and those 2 plants have been hit by blight overnight!!!!! I have others outside but in a different border. I picked off the semi ripe ones and have disposed of the plants. I really hope the others aren't affected. I lost all of mine to blight last year.

Thats a great shame! I had one plant outside, a left over I couldnt give away, and it has the symptoms too, its been ideal weather for the spores Im afraid. The ones in the GH are doing well though. It may not be a good idea to grow toms outdoors for a few years, Im pretty sure the spores can survive in the soil for quite some time.

One of my plants outside has it, the others I am keeping my fingers crossed for - although the Gartenperle doesn't look too hopeful. The others on the other side of the garden are ok thus far! Just wondered, on the one that definately has it and the toms are just starting to ripen, do you think I could rescue the rest of teh green crop and turn them into chutney? If there are enough on closer inspection that is.

I seem to have avoided it. Picked masses yesterday.
I have an idea that if you get blight you can't even make use og the unripe ones.

I've just had a quick look on the RHS site and they say destroy plants and do not save seed - no specific mention of the unripe tomatoes. Will have another search later.

My gartenperle crop was abysmal (again) this year....the last two years our tomatoes have been rubbish. I dunno whether it's lack of sunshine or the varieties I'm choosing....back to moneymaker next year methinks....always used to have decent crops off those...

When I ditched the plants I picked all the tomatoes and put them into a large paper bag, then forgot about it. I found the bag last week, yes some had gone off, but also a lot had gone red , so in the end I did get a sucsessful crop out of the plants. . I intend to make chutney out of the green ones.
