My parents didn't read the memo posted by the people who live here asking that they refrain from making more chickies ... So here I am! Baby cockateil ... about 3 weeks old!

Um..he's not exactly a thing of beauty but he has a certain charm doesn't he? ;D You can see the dinosaur heritage at this stage too - a thing which always fascinates me.....I assume he will eventually grow into his legs and feet! Welcome to the world Spike! ;D

He's not the cutest baby ever, is he? Uglier than sin may be closer to the mark. ;D We have an aviary full of various birds and are trying to give away the Ring-neck Doves FOR YEARS! There's finches and others. We honestly do not need more birds however the cockateils easily find new homes once they are on their own.
Mike thought he looked like a young Billy Idol. LOL!
Does anyone have a guess-timate how old the chick is? The parents are raising him (and apparently stuffing him) so we're not really sure when he hatched. I was thinking around three weeks old? Any opinions? Thanks.

The ring necked doves are not native and will die here over winter. It is far too cold for them. Here's Spike as of today: Not a bad lookin' chicky! ;D

Baby Spike is leaving for his new home tomorrow. The people own an orchid greenhouse and were very keen to get one of my babies. I really wanted them to take a dozen or so ring-neck doves but they wanted Spike. ~SIGH~ There's more siblings on the way. Mom and Dad are taking turns sitting on more eggs!

Well, he's turned out much better than I expected! Good luck to him in his orchid filled new home then.

Does he still look the same as in the last photo C3D? Or has he filled out a bit now? I hope he has a lovely life in his new home.

His tail is longer and he's a little larger. He's about 3/4 full grown now. I hope he adjusts well to his new home. I told his new people if things are not working out to please return him. Do you get the idea I have mixed feeling about this? LOL! The first cockateil chick we had adjusted quickly and happily. We hope the same for this little one. Feathers crossed!

I re-homed 2 of my nans birds today 3cccd as she had been poorly lately and is struggling to look after them. There was a greeny yellow budgie called Billy and a bright pink parakeet called Rosie, Ive never seen a parakeet like her, My nan seemed to think she was a rosie bourke? I've had a google but cant see anything like Rosie. Glad Spike has gone to such a lovely sounding home

Oh gosh! There's soo many colour variations with the budgies now. A bright pink? Sounds very pretty! Do you have a photo of Rosie that you could post? Spike's new family loves HER! I believe the birdy is a female. She's still very young but one can make a fair guess as to the gender by locating their pelvic bones and feel if there is a large gap or narrow gap between the two bones. If there is a larger space, an egg would eventually be able to pass. If the bones are almost touching no egg would be able to pass and it's likely a male. This cockateil, now renamed Sweetie Pie, has a gap between the bones. Certainly not enough for an egg to pass yet but as she continues to grow I suspect the gap will widen. The couple and the gentleman's Mum LOVED their new addition! She's soooo calm around them too. I think they'll be just fine together! They took me to one of their greenhouses and told me to pick anything I wanted! YIKES! I can't do that! I repeatedly told them the bird was a gift and had nothing to do with their business. Soooo the guy picked a really odd looking orchid (he knows I like the unusual stuff) then his Mrs. gave me a very pretty Jewel Orchid and then the guy gave me an African Violet too! He wanted to keep giving me stuff but I told him no. I was feeling funny about raiding his GH. They said they felt funny about getting the bird, cage supplies too! So we had a good laugh about it all. They said they might take some doves too when then make room in one of the green houses. .

How nice an exchange, you gave bird lovers and bird and they gave an orchid lover some plants, and you both loved and nurtured each for the other I never took any photos of Rosie, but decided to google again and I found her! My Nan was actually right! She had a pair but the male died about a year ago, a few years back for two years in a row they laid an egg on her birthday, but they weren't in the right environment to hatch it. Here is a link with a pic of a bird identical to Rosie. www.angelfire.com/pop/4birds/tweet4.html
