Have your pets [dogs in particular] ever single-handedly ruined your garden? Or at least attempted to? We have 2 dogs and they've both been delegated to the bottom end of the garden via the construction of a wooden fence and gate. HAHA...take that you pesky dogs! I love our dogs, but I don't love what they are doing to my patio area...GRRR This is what they've gotten up to: 1. Dug up freshly planted flowers in pots. 2. Pee'd on my lavendar bushes and killed 2 [possibly 3] of them. 3. Dug up my lavendar bushes on Numerous occasions. 4. One of them actually managed to pee in a pot of campanula and kill it. 5. Intimidate my cat and won't allow him in the house. 6. Do their 'jobs' all over the border...on the plants themselves. 7. Rip the bins open. 8. Steal food off our plate when we're having a BBQ. 9. Jump all over the patio table when we're eating. 10. Scratched my brand new PVC patio doors [glass and frame]. Have you ever had to do something similar with your dogs?

It all depends on the breed of dog Goth. For instance a boxer is a mindless fool. If you give a boxer a box wrapped paper he will tear the paper off, and then rip the box to shreds to see what was inside. Now a border collie on the other hand would carefully peel the sellotape away, open the box carefully to check its contents, the rewrap the box so you would never suspect he had been inside. What breed is yours?

Not that well trained then Goth? HAHA...no Our terrier wasn't too bad before we had the spaniel...at least he'd listen. Our spaniel was 2 when we got him and the previous owners didn't do too much with him in the way of obedience training. He was house trained and that was it. He just will not listen...at all. No way, no how. He's an extremely willful dog. Well, of course our terrier is copying him, isn't he? It's like the terrible two's only 10 times worse!

Not that well trained then Goth? Have to agree there!!! Don't you feed them, either? Have you thought about a sand pit with doggy things buried in it, so they can have their own place to dig and get praised for doing so? Our dog is a Rough Collie, so naturally a very clean dog and as she is a bitch, she won't wee up at plants, like her male counterparts do!! So the answer to your question, no we haven't. Now our two sons, well the youngest anyway, that's a different question altogether!!!

Our chickens would happily wreck the garden so a lot of things are above hen level in baskets etc and I try and plant things that they don't like pecking. It's probably the same things with dogs - if the plant is big and robust enough it'll probably withstand dog/hen attack. The hens can't resist Lady ferns so they are either in hanging baskets or in pots stacked up on concrete blocks. It must be infuriating them doing their stuff ON the plants though. Apart from 2,4,6 and 10 you could be describing our chickens. Especially with the intimidating the cat bit.

Can't help with dogs i'm afraid but I have similar problems with my cats. They love digging up newly planted plants, or watering them in for me. . Like Keith my son also loves digging in the flower beds if I haven't planted enough plants to cover the soil. Grrrrrrrrrrr. Giving the dogs there own area is the best solution I think and maybe feed them more.

Little Stephen likes digging, but only where I tell him to dig, but it's the football and tennis balls that do the damage!! The only reason I went to the G/C at the weekend, was to get some compost, so that I could try and root a cutting from my aeonium, that got a sore head by a stray football. Give him his dew though, he did tell me straightaway! When he said the purple plant, I didn't think of that one, well not until I had exhausted all my other similar coloured ones!! I will take some blame, as it was only going to be where it was for a few days, until I had decided where I was going to bury the plant in it's pot, behind the pond!! That'll teach me! ;D

and maybe feed them more. They get enough food...believe me! Regular dog food, plus any food waste that we may generate that day ;D They're just greedy. They're the type of dogs that will eat and eat until they burst...if allowed to : Giving them their own area seems to be working anyway. They've calmed right down and are not barking so much as they did before either

Back in the early 90s I'd just started getting in to gardening...the boys were older so they didn't need the space to play in and our cats spent most of their time asleep on the shed...I had a lovely flower border, and a veg patch at the back...then we bought a puppy in 1994. She ate the garden. Until she passed away I stuck to growing stuff in pots and in the GH....she just ate everything else! The lawn has only just recovered (she died <stifledsob> in 2004) ... BUT...OH made the gazebo incorporating the wood from of her favourite bench (she used to lounge on it in the sun ) and we made the 'Kipper Memorial Garden' at the back where she used to patrol or sit in the shade....I see her there all the time...but then I'm a daft old woman. I do love my garden...but I wish we still had her. I still miss her very much.

Also, the food given, is it non spicy etc. I knew someone who regulary did this with curries etc. and then wondered why they had to take the dog to the vets, as it was excessively drinking!! Do you worm them at least 6 monthly as well? Glad they have calmed down a bit, lets hope it lasts. This reminds me a bit about our Jemma, Souki's predecessor, when we went to Jennifer's sister in Birmingham, in a hired van to pick up a few items of furniture. Now all the way there, she had the whole of the back of the transit to herself. Would she settle, no! Coming home, she had barely the space to turn around, yet she was settled and slept like a baby all the way home!!

OMG! Then there was Daisy ...... She's a 2 year old Elkhound-ish doggy that was literally tied up to the skip at the back of my animal hospital about a year and a half ago. Fast forward after I brought her home ..... She has shredded the liner of the wildlife pond ..... TWICE ! She has pulled the driftwood from that same pond until we gave up replacing it. She has pulled out the water lettuce, water hyacynths, water lilies and either shredded them to kingdom come or layed them out to sun and shrivel in the sun. We have honestly lost count of the number of plants she has destroyed ... at least 5 different varieties of Japanese Maple, Azaleas, Daisies, Iris, ........ Last year we had NO veggie garden because she ransacked the area and pulled the tomatoes, potatoes, cucumbers, melons. The worst she does is Daisy stalks, runs down, catches and KILLS squirrels and birds! So far this year she has caught and killed two squirrels, two Blue Jays, three Common Grackles, and a House Finch. Crazy Daisy has also pulled down and destroyed at least 5 bird feeders. She has taught the German Shepherd puppy, Rani, her techniques as well. Rani has shredded several orchids and other tropicals that were placed outside for the summer. (( It is just too painful for me to recount in detail what Rani has done. )) Thank God that Rani has NO interest in running down or killing a bunny, bird or squirrel! We only have a veggie garden this year because we fenced off the area where the tomatoes, cukes and others may grow and lounge around without worry they will be plucked, shredded or trampled into oblivion by our doggies. ~*~*~*SIGH!!!!!!!!*~*~*~

The only problem we have with our Souki is, since we had to have her done, due to phantom pregnantsies, she hasn't liked strangers, especially men and noise. She's basically gone nervous. The neighbour's dog next to us, doesn't like men either, is that normal, C3D? Whether it was 'cos she had been done, though the vet said there is no evidence for that, I don't know, but it seemed such coincidence and before that we had so many people wanting puppies off her, due to her ice sociable temperment. The only other thing that happened was, she set our house alarm off and got greeted by two big burly policemen, as the alarm was linked into the station. She had managed to open two doors to get into the alarmed room, so not our fault really. The police saw the funny side, really they did. Talking to the bahaviour nurse at the vets, she had the same problem with her second Rough Collie, a bit like me. Now if she can have problems, what hope do we normal people have?

I have a dog, Toby, a cross between a labrador (ish) and a spaniel and he's always been very good in the garden. I don't think I've ever had a really baaad dog. My beloved Robbie dog was a bit of a wrecker but only because he was rather large and goofish (part Irish wolfhound), there was no malice or naughtiness involved, he was just a rather large dog in a smallish garden Toby is much too silly to have any bad habits and is really only interested in cuddles and a bit of ball/stick lobbing. Actually (not meaning to sound smug) he is really nearly perfick (bit smelly though...). I do feel for people who have pets with destructive ways (mind you, that applies to their children too!) That peculiar Victoria thingummyjig on the dog behaviour training programmes, the leather booted dominatrix, would soon sort them out I expect..and anyone else interested too.....
