Hello. On there was a plant on Gardner's world the week before last, it was in the section on self seeded plants, and this one was growing beside a railway somewhere down south and its a native of the canary islands. It was ecca_something? My neighbors have one growing in their garden. They grew it from seed and in 3 years it has grown to 9ft plus and its now in flower. The neighbors think it will die after its finished flowering and they are glad as it takes up a lot of room. (they dug its two sisters out) a few of my visitors have commented on how nice the plant is and I want to try to get some seeds from it if I can (I want to look the plant up a bit before I ask the neighbors). I can't remember the name, does anyone else know?

Hi emsey, I don't recall seeing it on Gardeners World, but from your description, could it be Eccremocarpus scaber (Chilean Glory Vine). I have one in my garden grown from seed. It has been there for a few years now and comes back every year and produces babies from seed. It is sheletered and I'm in the South East.

I've googed the glory vine and I dont think thats the one I forgot to add that next doors plant grows in a tall spike and had blue/purple flowers.

I have one in the garden emsey...it's still only about 40" tall and I think that if it had been going to flower this year it would've done so by now... Maybe next year....takes up a LOT of room as well as it's so big.

Quote from one of my many gardening books - Echium Pininana (syn. E pinnifolium) This half-hardy, short lived, perennial bears lance shaped deep green hairy leaves. After about 3 years it bears rose or mauve tubular flowers, held in spikes on side stems. It dies after flowering. Height 13 foot spread 3 foot. I take it you ladies wont be wanting any seeds then ;D It wouldn't look right in my garden far too ostentatious!

They are amazing plants though Emsey. Someone gave me a good sized one last year but it's far too cold and windy around here so I passed it on to Cheery. Once they are established they will self seed so, if you have the right conditions, they will keep going. I wish I could grow them - they're beautiful things.

Next door cant wait for it to die ;D They want the space back, I did warn them its liable to self seed. I think it would look nice in my dads garden, he's just put loads of white gravel down very zen.

I just hope that mine gets through the winter here....after all the nurturing and care I'd be gutted if it upped and died before flowering
