I was cleaning out my daughters hamster Optimus Prime (don't ask!!) last night and he bit me!!! I've never ever been bitten by a hamster before and I've worked in a pet shop for 4 years!! It took a good 5-10 mins to stop bleeding and it was pouring!! I'm still in pain this morning it's throbbing away like mad atm! I've got a plaster around it to hold it together at the mo and I put some sudocrem on last night, but it's still killing me! OH can do the cleaning out from now on!!

They can be painful - I had one when I was about 4/5, Hammy (ok original!) - and he bit me one morning, blood everywhere - big mistake when Mom was trying to get me ready for school, making sure my brothers were up and getting ready for work, we were having a damp course put in the house and she was trying to sort herself out for work! She did spare him but it was close and she was never very keen on him after that!

I remember one of mine biting me when I was small - I was convinced that its top and bottom teeth had met inside my finger it was that frenzied! Once bitten never forgotten. Maybe you disturbed him during a sublime moment of religious reflection Debi. ;D

I'm sure it connected with bone in the middle!! It's all purple and swollen.

It's eased off a bit now, the swelling seems to have gone down a bit, I think it just got really bruised. I took the plaster off to let some air get to it and it looks a bit better for it.

Have you had a tetanus jab recently? Just what I was going to say Keith. I think this is worthy of an anti-tet if not, Debi you have to think of the baby too.

I can't have a tetanus jab, I looked it up on the net, they say there is a risk to the baby. I'm within my 10 years as well. I have to make sure I'm up to date for work.

Torniquay your arm right at the top, tightening until you arm is numb and going blue. Then have the tetanus injection. Then give your arm a good shake to spread it around and get it to the finger tips. Before removing the touriquet slice the end off one finger and drain the blood from the arm (it's only around a pint - same as you give to the BTS). Then you can remove the tornakay and fill your arm up again. Voila - baby unharmed

Apparantly, they're worse if the hamster is under 6 months old (we've had him since xmas) so I think I'm in the clear, also you can go into anaphalactic shock with bites but that happens instantly, so I'm safe of that. I think it's just very bruised. If it starts getting hot I'll be straight up the Urgent Care Centre I promise!

A Vamster? .does he hide from daylight, and have you developed any photo-sensitivity yourself?

He was a rescue, somebody dumped him around the corner from work in his cage outside in the pouring rain a couple of days before xmas. his cage was swimming with water. Maybe they dumped him because he was a biter. Saying that we've had him out dozens of times without any probs.

Debs I would dab some TCP on it or even dip in hot water with tcp I know it hurts Ive been bitten by hampsters and gerbils when my kids were young! its a good idea to wear gloves when your cleaning them out I think they feel threatened.

My finger had been healing up nicely, when today i noticed a tiny hair caught on it, (or so I thought!) so I pulled it, only to find IT IS EMBEDDED IN MY FINGER!!! The slightest pull really hurts, so I'm not sure what to do, whether to cut it off and have a piece of hair in their for eternity or to bite on a stick and pull it out.
