I've just noticed that some new stems on my lillies have what look like small bulblets along the bottom of the stem. If I pull these stems off the main plant some have roots at the bottom and some have a small bulb. Will both the root ones and the bulb ones both grow? Will stems grow from each of these bulblets? Also, if I store these little bulbs will they grow if I plant them next year?

Lilies are only too easy to grow from these bulbils. Don't wait to 'sow' them in spring though, do it as soon as they fall off naturally. Treat like ordinary big seeds. Grown on they take about three years to reach flowering size.

Thanks OB. That's answered it perfectly.

I answered this question years ago on the Beeb. I followed my own advice and now we have dozens of the dratted things all over the garden.

I answered this question years ago on the Beeb. I followed my own advice and now we have dozens of the dratted things all over the garden. ;D I released all mine from a pot as they were irritating me being in there, getting really congested and a hiding place for slugs who kept munching all the best bits! It was then that I noticed the bulbils. I think they look much better in the flower bed - at the moment!! I bet they look lovely though in your garden when they're in flower OB?

Yes, but a bit of a bind going round removing the stamen so that there is no pollen to poison the cats. Easy with 6 but not so with 60

Bit late now, there must be well over 150 lilies in the garden. Not got room to plant any more really. Will have to wait till the dreaded beetle arrives and wipes them out!
