I have an Ilex Pyramidalis which something was eating. All I could see on the underside of the leaves were these little spindly spiders with a fat yellowish belly and light coloured legs. I didn't think it could be them so left them there. Lo and behold, on inspecting my hanging baskets I noticed that one of the nasturtium leaves had been 'folded' on each corner and on unwrapping these folds found two of these little perishers inside! These spiders have to be the culprits but does anyone know what they are? I thought all spiders in the garden were the good guys!

Well really! ;D These spiders are expert folders - they fold themselves inside the leaves. This nasturtium leave was about 100 times bigger than the spider, they did an expert job with it but what I'm worried is what else they do!

Last year I caught two of them making paper aeroplanes and having a competition as to which would fly the furthest! And the year before one made a frog from a privet leaf!!!

It's when you have a colony of leaf-cutter ants AND a colony of origami spiders that you get true devastation in the garden!

we had a nest of interesting looking baby spiders clustered in a ball on the water butt...they'd disperse then rush together again when you blew gently on them ( ;D )
Turns out they're baby garden spiders (the ones that get really big, as adults they're brown or beige with a sort of cross on the abdomen) the babies have yellow bodies with a little black 'triangle' on their abdomen. I made a little leafy bridge from the water butt to the passiflora...and they hurried across and are now getting fattened up ready to terrify me in the autumn.....

They sound like those ones Cheery but they're a nuisance! The thing is that I haven't the heart to hurt them - I don't know just how extensively they can damage things. I did evict the family from the nasturtium they'd moved in on though.
