;D Thank you all very much I have had a great day which, actually started on Monday night with part of my Birthday present A Tropical Aquarium. Today started with Tea and biscuits in bed and opening presents. which included. Sweets and chocolates. - yummy. Gardening Mag Gardening bits and bobs box Glasses that had been hand painted by the children. a vest that will never come above the top of my jeans - great when i'm gardening. - I hate my back getting cold. : and yes I am getting old ;D plus other bits and bobs. Followed by lunch at the pub - Then on to a garden centre with aquatic centre to buy some fish - 'Danio' Zebra and Leppard. 2 of each. Also managed to buy 2 courgette plants 1 x Aubergine, 1 x Artichoke and a Colocasia illustra ( Elephant ears) then back home for friends and introducing the fish to their new home. Which at the moment are called Titch, Whiskers, Bruce ( the boss) and Stripe. ;D Last but not least a great meal in Ombersley. brilliant.

It sounds like you had a perfect day Ali. Has the tank been running( how do you do that secretly! ) to get the filter working? Thanks Mrs B, I had a wonderful fun packed day although my head didn't agree the next day : The fish tank was empty when I got it on the Monday so we filled it up and added the necessary dechlorination mix to speed things up plus a thermostat to get the water to the right temp.( Also checked the filter was running properly) On the Tuesday I chose some plants and then left the tank to settle some more before buying the fish almost 48 hours later. ( which I was advised to do by the Aquatics shop.) I am totally new to keeping fish and so far so good they seem to be happy, although I do have one (Bruce) who seems to hog the top of the tank and chase the others away. I read on a tropical fish forum that Danio's like to swim in groups of 6 or more ( I only have 4 at the mo.) I wonder if this might be a reason for chasing the others away. If you have any hints, tips or knowledge I would be very grateful. A.x

Wow! you were spoiled - and why not indeedy. ;D Keep us informed on how Titch, Whiskers, Bruce and Stripe get on in their new home. Have you kept tropical fish before? Yes I was a bit and the fish tank was totally unexpected The only fish I have ever kept were goldfish won at the fair, and thats going back some. If you can help at all with looking after them I would very much appreciate it. A.x

If you have any hints, tips or knowledge I would be very grateful. A.x Sorry Ali, missed your replies. You have two seperate danios, both of which would like to be in a shoal of about five or more. Zebra danios in particular, are good in a new tank, as they can cope with higher level of ammonia/nitrite than most tropical fish. Can I suggest you go out and get test kits for both nitrite and more important, ammonia levels? DON'T INTRODUCE ANY MORE FISH UNTIL THERE IS NO MORE AMMONIA PRESENT. 0.1PPM of nitrite will be OK with the fish you have. Only feed little amounts of food for the first 4 weeks. Basically fish excrete pure ammonia (as ammonia and ammonium), which get converted by good bacteria to less harmful nitrite, then more bacteria convert this to nitrate, which you get rid of mainly by water changes and real plants in your tank. Nitrate is still harmful, but only in large amounts. There are bacteria to help to get rid of nitrate, but you need oxygen starved conditions for this, which can be complicated to set up! Chasing other fish away, could be anything from, not enough of it's own kind, pH levels or ammonia/nitrite being present. The last two can be connected. Do the fish look OK? I would suggest doing a 10/20% water change with de chlorinated water brought to the same temperature as the tank water, then again in 5-7 days time, unless you have high ammonia levels. Then keep an eye on things. Do you have plenty of hiding places for the fish, any real plant? Vallis is a good plant to have at this stage. Let us know how it goes.
