Oooh my first new topic! Oooerr. I have got a quick question and I knew someone on here would know the answer (the knowledgable (?sp) lot that you are) ;D In my back garden I want to put down some cocoa shell to keep the weeds down. I prefer th look of it to bark but my dad says it is poisonous to cats and dogs. Now I know my cat will eat anything but I am pretty sure he wont eat cocoa shell!! Have any of you heard anything like this before?? I know Lilies are a worry with cats but I am not sure if my dad is just losing the plot!!

Hi Pinkie A lot of plants in the garden are poisonous/irritants one way or the other to pets and humans. some more so than others. It looks like your dad is right especially if your cat likes chocolate because cocoa shells smell like chocolate. ( I know my cat Monty loves chocolate especially mint flavoured - he was originally called minty ;D ) I didn't know anything about cocoa shells but found this link. www.agilitynet.com/health/gardenalert_cocoashells.htmlHope it helps. Found this too www.moggies.co.uk/plants.html

Absolutely, your dad is right Pinkie, Cocoa shells are toxic to cats, even if he/she doesnt eat them it will get on their paws and they will lick it off. There are many plants too, as Ali points out that are not good in a garden with cats, Lilies being the most famous, the pollen can cause rapid kidney failure. Best to be careful with your plantings, really.

Pinkie, I know a guy who use the cocoa shell. The dog went wild for it and it passed through at a million miles an hour....
I should think carefully...
