Ive bought a Sage plant!! my book says it thrives in Chalky soil!! Will it grow in my clay mix? or should I add something? Im sick of buying dried so I thought I would give it a go and Im getting complaints from the management if I buy the instant stuff. :

It might be better to put it in a pot Maggyd, with some gravel mixed in the compost - it does prefer free draining soil. Or you could try digging a hole and lining the bottom with gravel to help it along. As long as it doesn't get waterlogged it will probably be alright. It's one of the tougher herbs - just needs trimming in the Autumn usually.

Mine went to meet its maker sometime over the winter so I'm hardly qualified to offer advice. ;D But when it was thriving in the garden it was quite happy in our very alkaline rubbly soil. I then dug it up, put it in a pot because I thought it would look nicer - big mistake, it didn't take kindly to being moved and that's when it died. I'd grow it in a pot to be on the safe side.
