This is a hard one, Roan and I have read most of those articles. I sometimes think that the world should accept we are heading for a hot spell, like history has shown us, and plan for it rather than using all our 'energy' into trying to stop something that is going to happen anyway. Don't get me wrong, I don't, not care for what's happening, far from it actually, but can the little we do, REALLY make all the difference? In this day and age, where more airport terminals are being built to fly more people abroad, something has to give. Attitudes have to change over the whole world, before real progress is made. Also, if Bin Laden's deputies have their way, the world won't exist as we know it in years to come, to worry about a few extra miles our food has come from, will pale into significance! It's a hard one and I will sleep on it.

It's a very complex issue and not an easy one to solve. How CAN we feed our families on local grown food all year without compromising their health? For example smallest has eczema and should have quantities fresh fruit everyday to help her combat it - but the only fruits available around here atm are apples and pears, and they have dubious vitamins etc contents as they have been stored for months.....that's just one very tiny example of the problem. It really isn't as simple as buying locally and reducing our dependance on imported food. I think the author of the first article in your links was the most sensible really - thinking 'out of the box' more and using different measure about what food miles actually means - and Governments, businesses and global corporations working together more would make a huge difference. There are lots of things individuals can do to reduce food miles and dependance on imported food/materials but the real and long term results will come when the powers - that - be get their act together and start taking this whole issue much more seriously. If they can manage to wrench their minds away from personal aggrandizement and making war on other countries for gain that is.....
Good thread Roan! X
