Anybody know an easy(ish) way of getting rid of these blighters? our allotment plot is choked by them, We've tried weedol and the flame gun, but they just keep coming back!! Some have roots like parsnips! They just seem to snap when we try digging them up.
Any Ideas?

Um, they are horrendous I know - the only thing that might work is to completely cover them with black plastic for a couple of years at least........or repeated applications of a glysophate based weedkiller

I think we'll have to have a go at the glyphosate, as if we did the black polythene we wouldn't have a ny allotment left to plant on! ;D

Have you got many unused plots on your site Debbie? If you have I would also keep an eye out for docks which are chucking seeds everywhere in the Autumn - they are very prolific. It might be worth someone having a flurry with a machete occasionally! They make a lot of the other pernicious weeds look a doddle - just because they root so deeply really.

They are very handy if you get stung by a nettle though...

Glyphosate mixed with wallpaper paste painted on, then covered with a plastic bag, worked well for someone, I remember : Just remember to wear gloves, and beware chemicals in your delicate condition, ok? .

This reminds me when I was a kid. I got paid to pull out the docks in our field around us, as they are poisonous to the animals the farmer wanted to put there. They are perrenial, so Weedol doesn't work and like already mentioned, Glyphosate really is the only answer, unless you want to pull them out when young! As already mentioned, beware of stray seeds from elsewhere.
BTW, I didn't get paid much, but certainly got a bad back as it was just pasture land and trappled on by cows, horses, sheep, donkeys etc!!
