They are amazing...so downright ODD, some of them.......I love that Mamillaria lenta.......I bet it's spectacular in flower....(does it flower? ;D) They are so alien, aren't they? I do sometimes wonder whether they are owned by their growers, or if they own the growers...............it's all part of their evil plan.....

A handsome plant with rings of small pink flowers in early spring.

Aren't they great? What's the red bit growing out of the Melocactus Warasii? I can't quite make out what it is. I'm a complete novice when it comes to cacti. it doesn't look like a flower....

Melocacti grow like normal cacti until they reach flowering size whenthey produce a cephalium - which is what you can see. It is very bristly and the tiny flowers are embedded in it and are followed by quite colourful fruits. The cephalium continues to grow upwards and looks like a chimney on top of the plant. Kew have got a very odd one which did this then grew a completely new plant body on top of the cephalium until that rached flowering size and then that produced a new cepahlium. Have a look at Google images of Melocactus - there are some beauties there.
