That scare story really annoyed me! It's one thing people can do easily and inexpensively which actually makes a difference to our energy output and this is exactly the sort of thing which stops people doing so. The truth is that many of our everyday appliances contain extremely unpleasant and toxic substances but people just don't realise...to single out low energy bulbs as dangerous is quite unfair and irresponsible I think.

When I was a child, I used to clamber about in a skip full of broken thermometers looking for a whole one, many times only wearing white plimsolls, bare legged and ignorant of the danger from mercury. : If one of mine had been caught doing the same, I would have flipped! Back to these bulbs, the dangers involved in their use do not in my opinion cancel out the good they can possibly do for the environment, as usual safe disposal is key, the scaremongering goes on though, it does sell newspapers doesnt it?

It comes from the long ago days when mercury was ironed into top hats to make them shiny, the vapour the hat makers inhaled made them extremely loopy, permanently! :

Did you know that there is mercury in dental amalgam, which in some people with lots of fillings can lead to migraine. There is also a possible link between mercury in amalgam and Alzheimer's - www.drmyhill.co.uk/article.cfm?id=345I have been filtering tap water for drinking for years as I have been told that there is a link between Alzheimer's and aluminum. Well yes I got rid of aluminum pans over 30 years ago!! and I now if I need a filling I get it replaced with porcelain its much more expensive but I heard they were the cause of Arthritis/Rheumatism and general aches and pains.

Our (Green) minister for the environment has announced that conventional lightbulbs are to be banned in the next couple of years, and there's been a predictable storm of protest, focussing on this mercury issue. Actually, the amounts of mercury are tiny, and CFLs are no more toxic than, say, batteries - which should also be disposed of seperately. In any event, CFLs will be replaced by LEDs in the near future. As 4P says, switching over is something we can all do ... cheers ...
