I think it could be a good idea. Something has to be done about our landfill sites, just not sure if this is the way to do it. More paperwork, so more complicated in the workings of it. Will dustmen have to have a degree now and not just A'Levels? Keith P.s. Can non AOL members see this? Edit If not see here.. news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/5253990.stm

It will probably happen. This govenment see only one solution to most problems - make the general public pay. Instead of legislating that all supermaket carrier bags must be biodegradable Instead of legislating that manufacturers must minimise packaging Instead of providing households with compost bins They take the easy route - increase petrol tax, create a new rubbish tax, bump up the council tax. I reckon my income is around half in real terms what it was 10 years ago and am struggling to make ends meet.

They need to get the cash from somewhere, to buy the bombs with which they can start attacking Iran with! Keith

My cousin who lives in London already has been fined for not recycling! He told me so in June, so how is this new? : The spy bins are being trialled somewhere too they have a chip in them to detect recyclable materials such as metals.... where was that?

They'd have a field day over Christmas then wouldn't they? Unless we ask the assistant in toyshops/Woolies/Asda/Curry's etc etc to take the dolly/game/appliance etc etc out of the box and leave all the packaging in the shop.

Personally I think it's very short sighted - it will just encourage fly tipping IMO. I agree with Sleepy - the powers that be seem to have tunnel vision and instead of tackling the problem with a bit of creative thinking the poor old tax payer has to bear the burden - it's not easy to be completely thorough about recycling if you have a family unless you sift through the bins before they are collected and how many people have time or inclination for that? Make ALL packaging recyclable, totally ban plastic bags at source (ie the supermarkets who shove them at you even when you say you don't want them) and spend some money on improving recycling facilities and collections. Oh, and BAN JUNK MAIL!
It's not that complicated is it? It just needs a bit of committment and leadership. We don't seem to have either at government level atm.....

I think we should have recycling containers for all types of refuse ATM I can only get green waste and paper collected, and as I compost all my green waste, I dont use that part of the service. MY BIL who lives in Devon has paper, plastic, and metal containers as well as green waste, and the normal bin which is rarely filled..... and they are all collected on the same day. Not everyone can visit a recycling centre, so collections are important.

Not everyone can visit a recycling centre, so collections are important. We're quite lucky as we have three wheelie bins. One for normal things, one for green rubbish and one for dry recyclables. In that one goes plastic, cardboard, paper, tin, textiles and shoes, actually most things that can be recycled. They collect all bins every two weeks, not on the same day, mind! The only problem with the bins is finding where to store them! Keith

There are lots of things that could be recycled but not enough of it is, so thus it goes to land fill, its all to do with money, or lack of so pass it on to the tax payer make them pay for it. Lots of people do recycle but there are some that dont and wolnt so its not fair that we should suffer because of them. My green and grey bin get emptied on alternate weeks as do most now, my green bin is always full, but my grey bin is half full. I think as a lot of people do, if the manufacturing companies used more biodegradable packaging and stopped giving out carrier bags then it would go a long way to helping the environment.
Ive started keeping all my plastic containers that mushrooms etc come in for either seed trays or drip trays, also trifle pots yoghurt pots for plant pots, ive also started keeping the plastic parts from things like apple pies and mince pies for drip trays.
My OH calls me steptoe but i say if i can use it then why throw it, i know there are lots of people like me that re use things for gardening etc, we should all be rewarded for that but are not.
Sorry for going on, but they will do what they want to do, but i know my bill will not be high if this does come into forse.
Sorry ive had my moan and hope ive not offended anyone.

You go on as much as you like Karen! (I do..... ;D) What you say is absolutely right (IMO). And if you/we prick someone's conscience when they read this then that's all to the good isn't it? People who don't recycle are selfish, lazy and/or just plain thick and if someone reads that and is offended - well, I don't care very much actually!

I have followed your discussion with interest as we have a recycling system that works very well where I live.
We used to have a large rubbish tip and no one recycled anything, then the council announced it would close the rubbish tip down and provided a recycle collection service alongside our regular rubbish collection.
Now there is hardly any waste and a lot of the recycled stuff is sold back to the public in one form or another.
regarding packaging at supermarkets etc., we always ask for no plastic bags and use re-usable bags instead.
