I have just spent a really fun 2 hours clambering about my Hazels trying to gather in the nuts. Smallest, Mum and I have thoroughly enjoyed ourselves filling a basket using a walking stick to pull the branches down. The 2 trees are covered with nuts. We left quite a few as I had to cut down a couple of Elder saplings and slash through a nettle forest to get to them. I can't think of a finer way to spend a sunny afternoon than picking a lovely harvest from trees I planted 11/12 years ago.....brilliant! Obviously the cider is there just for scale. Hazel nuts are so pretty with their little frilly cases and particularly scrummy washed down with a nice cold drink.... ;D

They have cut the hedges here so all the nuts have gone and they were just getting ripe enough to pick. Sad they will not ripen properly off the tree is it not?

I think that's very nearly criminal OB. What a total waste! We have all had a lovely pig out on fresh hazels....yum!

Funny enough we very rarely get any nuts on our Hazel hedge. We think the field mice eat them long before they are ripe enough for us to pick.

I am always surprised that we rarely see squirrels in our garden, only being a field away from Thetford Forest. My Hazels are very close to the barn too which hopefully protects them a bit - 3 cats constantly about! Most of the mice I see are dead ones.....(not many though!)
