What a lovely start indeed Myrtle! We have the odd surprise visitor in the odd blue or coal tit, siskin - they are the yellow ones aren't they? And tiny birds with huge tails which I think must be wrens or dunnocks? But the out and out stayers are the resident doves in the huge Horse Chestnut which overlooks our garden, a resident blackbird and the crows and seagulls. Seagulls are beautful birds but a right pain in the ar*e! Or a yellowhammer? Here is a siskin. Dunnock or wren. Dunnocks are like sparrows, which is why they used to be called hedge sparrows, until the powers that be, realised it was a different species. Hope this helps.

A juvenile green woodpecker this morning after the ants in the front lawn & drive ;D We haven't seen them around lately so it was great to see him/her. I tried to take a photograph but it wouldn't focus through the window. He flew off when hubby went out to work and we could hear him 'cackling' in the oak trees at the cricket club opposite! A happy Myrtle today and what a great start to the day (well I enjoyed seeing him!) Have you not got your OH trained yet? Once you have the photo, then he can go to work! ;D Have you got a manual focus on your camera? If not, you could try moving the camera so close to the window, that it's auto focus won't be able to focus on the window, but at what is outside. Hope that makes sense. I have ended up taking shots with the camera lense frame, actually touching the window, before, even though I have manual focus on mine as well as the auto function. Great sight though, I have never seen a young one before. Hubby suggested the manual focus - I don't know where that is though - must find out! I have seen the photographs I take and could do better would sum them up! I think the two this morning are probably beyond help but will have a look later. He was lovely with muted colours - his green was browny/green still. I do love that cackling sound they make - always makes me chuckle!

Thanks The witch. Craig actually thinks it's a skate 'park' and that the object is actually a kid on skates, bmx or even a skateboard!! When I used the other map finder thingy, the one you have used in the past, it looks clearer and there looks to be a sort of wire fence around it! If I do manage to get down in these summer holidays, I am going to find out for myself what it is.

Craig could be right Keith - or it could even be a skid pan! www.197aerial.co.uk/evolution.htm Oh that does look similar, doesn't it? Hope not though!! It isn't too far from where the badgers were, if they still are that is!

We see Woody every morning now! That's the purpose of the ants in our front garden! He/she is on the edge of the underground metropolis as described by Cheery on another thread ;D Keep eating Woody! I will try and take a decent photograph but don't hold your breath please!

Stephen has a bad cold atm and Jennifer was a little sniffy herself last night, too. Bare with me here, you'll see where I am going with this!! Anyway, I got woken up at 3am, with Jennifer snoring the house down, so I decided to do what I normally do, when she gets like this and sleep on the settee, downstairs. Sorry Jennifer, I know it only happens when you have a sniffle!! Anyway, to cut a long story short, when Stephen came down at 8.30ish and opened the curtains and patio doors to let Souki out, I lay there for a while longer (still hadn't slept too well) to listen to and see the birds that were around. My big sorbus was alive with Blue Tits, Great Tits, Robins, Blackbirds, House Sparrows, Greenfinches and even the odd collared dove and Jackdaw. Now I wouldn't have said that two years ago, would I? P.s. I can't be depressed now, can I?

I have lots of birds visiting but never seem to have the camera handy! I did catch these on one of the feeders. Not great photos but I at least I caught them.

They're OK, FC, especially the second one. I wish the Tits would come onto my feeders, it's still just the Goldfinches and House Sparrows, not that I am complaining, mind. I'm always throwing the peanuts away, as they don't get eaten, unless I allow the seed feeders to go dry, that is!

We have loads of birds visit our Garden, mainly a lot of Pigeons, Robin, Blackbirds, Blue Tits, Long tail Tits, a couple of Green finches Thrush, Magpies, Collared Doves, Great Tits, Wren, and the Woodpecker at intervals. They are all so lovely and I love to see them feeding and squabbling who gets the best place. I forgot to include the Starlings who really have a go at shouting at each other at times which makes me laugh. The Dunnock comes at times also. Speak to you all soon, Gemmajimjams :

As The witch says Gemma, that is a good selection of birds. I wish we had some thrushes in our garden, I do love their snail killing antics.

I have a couple of young birds, that look as though they may be thrushes, they are speckled on the breast but are hopping around like Blackbirds. I haven't seen any adult Thrushes for years here, could they young Blackbirds, do they have speckling when they are young? The bird activity here has been great over the last few weeks. We have Blue Tits, Chaffinches, Collared Doves, Crows, Pigeons, Starlings. Blackbirds and a few Sparrows and Wrens.

They always look so full of life I think. We have one which appears at breakfast time in the leek shed - and in the bleak weather he sits on the wheelbarrow handle waiting for us to chuck him worms etc..he's lovely.

Aah, I do love robins - one was on our mat outside the kitchen door the other day, I think he had been in the herb pots either side of the door.
We had two chaffinches on the bird table yesterday and the one stayed for 1/2 an hour or so, having a good rest and stretch out whilst he was there. Usually we see birds stretching out on the shed roof as it is in the sun but haven't seen them lying on the bird table before.
Also, went to see my Dad yesterday and whilst we were talking there were quite a few little birds flying around on their feeders and in the bird bath. They suddenly disappeared and the sparrowhawk flew in down the side of the house past the window where we were, under the framework of the swing seat and on to the fence!

Yes The witch I had a flock of the long tailed tits yesterday I counted ten and I caught a glimps of a blackbird they have been gone for longer this summer. Last night I was in the garden with teddy at!! well it was 3.ooam actally and in the trees behind us (its a small park) the birds were singing, then there was a loud high pitched sound I couldnt identify it but teddy started to bark at it! and it was if it was answering him or argueing with him I had to run out quick and bring him in before he woke the whole neighbourhood up! O.H. said it was probably crows but I dont think so.I didnt think the birds would be stiring that early.

I try to explain to her that it is a very small bird and that she should stick to the cats, but she doesn't listen!! ;D Could it have been a fox, by any chance? FC, could your screech owl be a Barn Owl? Which woodpecker have you got, The witch? Are the ducks on your pond? I would love to have some Longtailed Tits, in our garden! <jealoussmiley>
