There was a very odd looking insect crawling about on the bonnet of my car at Tescos this morning. I know it's virtually impossible to identify without a picture but this was a very small flying insect, barely bigger than a thumbnail, with a striped orange and black tail and white opaque wings - one pair I think. What intrigued me was that it had two trailing things coming out of its tail like bits of clear fishing line at 45 degrees and about as long as its whole body 10cms long maybe. Never seen anything like it before.... Any ideas anyone please?

No, it didn't actually. Much more pronounced stripes on its tail and with those odd forked bits behind it - something along those lines though. Thanks The witch! I shall have a google.....

It's not! Sorry....the pictures I've googled of a Giant Ichneumon - Rhyssa persuasoria, are much more like it but the tail is the wrong colour....it was one of that family I think though. Very interesting.

I think that's far too big - this creature was only about a maximum of 3/4 inch at the most. Are you bored yet?? ;D

I think that's far too big - this creature was only about a maximum of 3/4 inch at the most. Perhaps it was a baby......... Nope I like a challenge. Don't be silly The witch. Babies look nothing like insects. They are, on the whole, pink and wrinkly, and noisy, and poo a lot, and... well, you get the idea. You should make sure you recognise a baby when you see one The witch, otherwise in the condition you are in every time you see a fly or a wasp you will think you have delivered!!! You know, sometimes I just don't think you take these conversations seriously!
