This photo was taken yesterday just outside my garden. It was a very slow moving beetle 1 1/2 " long and 3/4 " at least over the widest part of the carapace, it was heading for my hedge....

It looks similar except for the pointed bit at the rear, is there a possibility its not a bad guy?

I wouldn't worry about killing it SL - as the adults chew the leaves of trees and shrubs, while the larvae live in the soil and cause much damage to root crops.

I suppose a big guy like that would have a large family too..... My hedge is over 50 years old, so Im sure its had its problems over that time, and survived them well, theres very little of note on that side of the garden.... unless it eats tractors ;D

What a shame! Such a handsome chap too. Do you think it's definitely one of those Sweetleaf? Isn't the insect world fascinating! You've found some great links there The witch. I've put one of them on my Bookmarks:smile

What is it?
Well, I am no expert coleopterologist, and I may be way off the mark here, so please bear this is mind. And also bear in mind that the description that you have given is very vague and sketchy (one just flew into the house... yuk). But, taking into consideration the location it was found at, the behaviour it exhibited and the, albeit vague, description given, I am of the mind that what you have here is most probably a huge beetle.

Looks like a chaffer grub.
Apparently a delicacy for foxes, which will tear up a lawn to get to them!!
