My insect book states - it is a sun-loving insect commonly seen on flowers and herbage in gardens and hedgerows. It is an excellent wasp mimic, especially when scuttling over tree trunks and it's antennae. Larvae develop in dead deciduous timber, including fence posts and fallen branches. This mimicry is for its own protection as potential predators will leave this completely harmless species alone. WASP BEETLE
