I really have got to get a better digital camera so I can show instead of describe....on my Lavatera Lilac Lady a few days ago was the most exquisite beetle, lilac itself in colour. A flat body in the shape of a shield, about a cm across with a kind of triangular pattern on it. I cannot believe that this beautiful thing can be anything but harmless...I know it's all a bit vague but has anyone seen anything like this and even more remotely know what it is from my description? Sorry it's not much to go on.

My garden hosted thousands of those last year, I found them everywhere, but I couldnt see any damage caused . I wonder if I had the ones which predate on each other, as there were so many but nothing was getting chewed.....I even found them floating on the pond. They arent bad swimmers, I watched one make its escape. Mine looked green.

Thanks everyone, this is brilliant. A shield bug it definitely was then- I see the green ones now and again in the garden but didn't know what they were. This one however was a lilac, or lilacy-purple. So that's what they are! I think the green ones are pretty spectacular too. Thanks again!!
