Mini Oddie has just let me know that a new series starts tonight on BBC2 - he has purchased a 52 acre plot with the proceeds of his book and he will be establishing a wildlife plot!

Not my cup of tea I'm afraid...I do usually like wildlife documentaries..but not Mr Kingdom's ones.

I watched this last night and it's interesteing to see the land and his plans but for me there is something that I cannot put my finger on. It was the same his last series. If is missed episodes I wasn't bothered.
I love the area, the countryside, the animals but I don't know if he has to tone down his natural enthusiasm to be able to present it (his accent is strong and perhaps people wouldn't catch what he was saying if he spoke as he would normally) and that's where I find it takes the edge off. I really don't know. I wonder if it's because we see it through his eyes and camera (in parts) rather than really excellent wildlife camermen. I'm thinking out loud here!
That was some pond last night! It's huge. And the otters were fun.

I enjoyed his first series, wasn't so interested in the second one and haven't bothered to look at this one. I think it's because he has been taken out of his natural element and it feels too contrived. There are quite a lot of characters like him left around here but they are a dying breed. I'm glad he was given the chance to record for posterity what he was good at - his complete knowledge of his local countryside and his love of recording it to show others. I'm glad he didn't tone down his accent too - there aren't enough speakers of local dialects of telly - most either have a slight regional accent or that truly awful estuary English which is just an amalgam of all sorts of influences and is hideous! ;D

He is a character and to see his him on his land which is what he has always wanted is great. 52 acres I think he said with a wood, stream, and now a massive pond! That would suit me - we would just need a house on there - nothing obtrusive. Did like the crock chicken they bought at the local market - he was huge!
