Ok, here is the full caterpillar. I think it is one of the Hawkmoth ones, you cannot see, but there is a hook on the end opposite the face. In all the larva was about 2 inches long.

The pic clearly shows it to be a face, teeth and all, I bet that its a very efficient eating machine too!

Well that is the face, unless it normally walks backwards! Nature is diverse, of course, but walking backwards is something I never heard of! ;D I wonder if the snout area extends when it eats?

I don't know anything about this so I've been googling. It says on Wikipedia that they are actually false eyes to frighten predators. They do have eyes but they have very poor vision. There is a close up which is a bit gruesome when you click on it.....you learn something every day. Actually that's 2 things I've learnt today. I also found out that the Leopard shark grows to 3.5m.... en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caterpillar

I found one in my garden the other weekend, wondered what it was and found this site. www.kendall-bioresearch.co.uk/moth1.htm#topunder the moth pictures you will find the catterpillar pictures and what they live on.
