We have a couple of foxes that trot along the street every evening. One used to come into the back garden and dug up the membrane under the gravel by the shed (making a bolt hole)..took ages to sort that out! I've never seen a hedgehog in our garden, but have come across hedgehog poo.... What gives me the shivers is the blood curdling fox call....you can see where some of the stories of ghosts and goblins came from in the olden days !

Yesterday I found a large hole dug under the fence at the end of my garden. Much too big for my doggy to dig and she hasn't come in all covered in mud either.
Guess it must be a fox who got into the garden and couldn't get out.
I've blocked it up now just in case me dog gets tempted.

Sounds like a fox to me, did you make sure nothing was in the hole before you blocked it up, Mick? Best way of doing this is using a cane and have a quick poke around! Keith

I've noticed this morning that something has had a rake at our lawn overnight near to the bird table and also through the pots by the house. We do have a hedgehog house in the garden and he could have been after the seed, assuming he has taken up residence by now, although, wouldn't it be too cold for him to come out?
His house has straw inside and last year he supplemented it by raking the moss out of the lawn and taking it is - there were about five raked areas and a trail leading up the ramp!
We do have a fox visiting again - he's left his calling card!

Um, you're quite sure it's not rats aren't you? I know I'm paranoid about them but I would immediately check for other signs if I'd seen the ground raked....I sincerely hope it is a hedgehog obviously!

Did anyone see the really fat hedgehog on the news this morning? He was really ROUND - the people in the sanctuary where he's living are putting him on a diet. Bless! :

Mrs B - no time in the morning to watch telly, I wonder if it will be on at lunch time.

4pygmies - we have had rats in the garden in the past but haven't seen any recently - in fact since one of neighbour's removed all the rubbish he was storing by the side of his house instead of putting his bin out each week! I've noticed this morning that something has had a rake at our lawn overnight near to the bird table and also through the pots by the house. We clean it out in the summer and put fresh paper and straw in and then just leave it. When we lifted out the straw this year, you could see where he had moved it and curled up in the space. There was also a smaller hole in the straw, further into the house and we think a mouse had shared it with him bless!

Is it OK to give hedgehogs dried cat food? Not ideal, but I expect it wouldn't harm a hedgehog, as long as it wasn't fish based food, for obvious reasons! Make sure plenty of water is given as well. Why do you ask, The witch, hedgehogs should be hibernating now? Keith

Why do you ask, The witch, hedgehogs should be hibernating now? Keith Not obvious to me Keith aren't hedgehogs supposed to eat fish then? Not seen any hedgehogs since this cold snap, but I did have one in the garden about 10 days ago. My cats don't have tinned cat food, Keith. Fish doesn't form any part of a hedgehogs diet, so they won't recognise the taste/smell. Tinned cat/dog food is best, while mealworms you put out for the birds, are also a good thing to put out for them. Thinking about the bird food, chopped peanuts are OK, as are sultanas and raisans. Small pieces of cheddar cheese, can be used, as well. Hedgehogs only have small teeth, so need whatever you put out to be small or chewable. You might get the odd hedgehog wandering around in the winter, during mild spells, but the ones we had when I was a kid, used to hibernate in the leaf mould pile, behind the apple tree, from about the end of November until late February/early March. Hope this helps. Keith
