My garden is hopping and leaping with tiny toads at the moment. It really is amazing quite how many there are....smallest sat out there yesterday for a while and counted over 20 in a space about a yard square. Where are they coming from? My tiny pond can't possible have spawned them all and there is no water within a mile......I have seen a couple of humungous adult toads (one seems to like my end barn and lollops about in there). It's a mystery. AND I can't mow the grass - I can't be responsible for a massacre........

Why couldn't your pond have been the spawning ground, they only go to ponds to breed and occasionally hibernate? Can't remember, have we seen pics of your pond? Well done anyway for seeing them, I have never seen that many together before. Frogs yes, but not toads. Keith

My pond is only about 30" wide and 24" deep though and it's lost under a ton of vegetation......I looked several times in Spring for any signs of spawn but didn't see anything. There really are HUNDREDS of baby toads.....I'll try and get a pic of smallest holding some - she had 5 in her hand yesterday.

Don't forget toadspawn is different than frogspawn, it's in strings and not lumps!! I will see if I can find a picture! Keith Edit Have a look on this page, it's quite different. Don't forget tons of vegetation is good for them!! www.threadnaught.net/~caleb/ukanura.htmlKeith

wow, i didn't know there was a difference in spawns! debbidoos is nurturing some rare aquatic lizard things in a tank at the mo and they look like white tadpoles. She is feeding them live wormy things she has to raise herself.

Well I never! Do you mean my tiny pond might actually be responsible for all these babies? There's a turn up for the books...I'm so proud! Definitely won't be massacring them with a mower - local toads from local ponds. Good!
I KNEW there was a reason my garden was FULL of weeds......granny to a thousand babies...sob!

Excellent pics! Lucky you, having that lot in the garden - puts pay to the mowing for a while . I'd better go out and check if my toad's got his act together - I don't want to mow down his entire family either.

Still everywhere! My lawn is so long now it must feel like a rainforest to them all. They are growing fast although I did see the most minute one skedaddling about on the patio in the rain this afternoon. They are so sweet.

As Spike Milligan once said "beauty is in the eye of the beholder ........ wash it out with Optrex" ;D
Aren't you worried about standing on one when it's dark 4P - perish the thought.

I do worry about it actually - it's quite hard to tiptoe with wellies.........still it would be quick death with my weight! I've had to rescue several from Freddies water bowl. I tried putting a stone in so they had some way to get in and out safely but the silly goat didn't like it and tipped the bowl over. Goats are very conservative creatures. Now it's at an angle so they can get to a dry bit if they need to. Wildlife are a worry sometimes.

I am going to HAVE to mow soon - the grass is over 5" tall now. It looks a proper mess.....the things I put up with for the wildlife. And they don't appreciate it at all...

Surely they would hop out of harms way once they hear the mower, unless of course yours is extremely quiet.

Nope, very noisy petrol one - but I don't know if they can move quick enough - and they only have tiny brains...how do they know which way is the safe way? It's a worry..

you'll have to comb the lawn before you mow, and put them all in a bucket till your finished, at least you'd know you did ur best!

Toads are warty maggyd and frogs are smooth. Frogs and toads only use water at breeding time, the rest of the time they like being in the undergrowth in the cool damp shade searching out bugs, slugs and insects etc to eat.
