Thought I'd put in a good word for the native Spindle tree (Euonymous europa, I think). It's not mentioned all that often as it's quite anonymous looking except for in the Autumn when it produces these stunning pink seed pods which split to reveal bright orange seeds. Not a common colour combination! I love it. Amazing, aren't they?

That's rather splendid 4P - is it suitable for a small garden?

Oh that's lovely The witch! I hope it flowers this year too - my little one was doing well but I think my sister's horse has chomped it a bit He does it to a lot of my trees when she puts him in my garden despite having an electric fence. I can't complain as he does keep the grass down but it really annoys me! :

They're really lovely trees aren't they? I'd love one too but my garden's really really, absolutely, without a shadow of a doubt FULL! ;D 4P how infuriating - you'd think he'd be happy with just the grass wouldn't you?

Thanks 4P ;D I wonder where I can squeeze one in?

Our local park has loads of spindle trees (as well as lots of other British shrubs and trees)...I was thinking of grabbing a few seed heads next autumn ;D is that legal?

Erm..I do help myself to wild seeds quite often.......besides everyone knows that fresh seed sown in Autumn is MUCH more likely to take..which means, later on, you can then replenish the native stock by a bit of guerilla gardening - makes perfect sense to me

I knew I shouldn't have looked at this thread! ;D I do like that, I've also ventured onto the Crocus website (for some reason I couldn't get on it direct here at work), funny that it's on a wish list now - along with about 5 other things in a very short space of time!
There is a rhyme about collecting - you can pick and pluck but you can't dig and ruck (?) - I cannot remember the last word but I think that's right! Will check later.

Crocus are brilliant IMO, all plants are well packed and very healthy. I've bought almost all of my shrubs from Crocus.

Oh that's good The witch! I can't see mine as my sister's horse is in the orchard surrounded by electric fencing - I do hope he hasn't nibbled at my tree - he had a really good chew at the Cedar of Lebanon a while back.... It's not a very big tree yet and my sister might not realise it's a little treasure in the making.....

I bought one of these lovely native trees bare rooted in the winter time. Euonymus Europaeus Red Cascade. It was recomended to me to encourage the birds into the garden. I planted it just after the snow had gone and am delighted to say it's coming on quite well. Did anyone else get one?
