Did anyone see Friday's programme on doing a wildlife garden? I have hardly ever seen this programme and probably won't again, but the winner's garden was a joke. It looked like a cross between seaside and japanese with coloured gravel and fence post sticking up. It 'won' because she had 'tried to do something different' to the norm, which the other contestant had done. Just because she had an ornamental grass that had seed heads for finches, it was deemed to be good for wildlife, oh and a tiny puddle. Where do they get these judges from? If they could put the two gardens together, I know which one would get more wildlife to it over the years. The wildlife garden had it all, good sized pond, plants for wildlife, birdtable, log pile etc. Oh I forgot the other one had a buddleia as well.
Sorry rant over. It has taken me this long to write this as I recorded it Friday night as well so OH could see it and she has now thought the same as me.

Who were the judges out of interest? Do they actually know anything about gardening or wildlife, or did they just drag in someone off the street?

I didn't see it Keith and I'm glad after your report! Just the words "tried to do something different"makes me as mad as fire - it's doing something different in our gardens (decking, concrete, pollen free flowers - AAARRGGHHHH! etc etc) that has resulted in such a disaster for our wildlife.........so now we need "wildlife" gardens instead of the usual habitat rich, diverse species and wonderful spaces which we used to share with the birds, insects and animals.

My sentiments exactly. Lots of these programmes on TV are to grab your attention. If the 'river' of blue gravel in the white gravel had been proper water, it might have been better, to a degree, but it was an impact garden to catch your eye. Why are our birds disappearing? Too much use of weed suppressing membrane so the birds can't get at the worms. They have a place in gardening, but not where the birds want to find their dinner. Many years ago, we were told to only feed birds in the winter, as at other times it was best for them to find their own natural diet. Now we are told to feed them all year, why? Lack of natural food or should I say, lack of places to get their natural food!! Like you said, I hate the saying I tried something different! But if it doesn't do the job of attracting wildlife more than the other, it has failed surely? My wife said the loser had no personality and was that why she failed? I said surely not, it is gardens we are judging, not the makers of them.

I sent a complaint about the programme, after OH saw it (just in case I was being silly) and just had this reply...
Thank you for your query regarding wildlife gardens in Turf Wars. We are not commissioning any more series of Turf Wars at the moment, but I shall pass your comments on to the production company in the case that we do commission more.
Many Thanks
Kerry McKittrick
Not exactly an answer is it, more of a cop out?
