Install a third party firewall - I strongly recommend Sygate Personal Firewall. And switch off the Windows firewall. Don't run two firewalls.
Ensure that you have an antivirus program installed, and that it's definitions are up-to-date. I strongly recommend AVG. Don't run two antivirus programs.
Install SpyBot Search & Destroy and Adaware
Run both regularly (fortnightly)
Defrag your machine every couple of months
Ensure that your Microsoft updates are errr... up-to-date
Don't open any emails where you don't know the sender
Don't open any attachments unless you are expecting it - even from people you know.
Don't visit porn sites
Follow the above rules and your machine will always run sweet and true
