I've got to take Poppy to the vet again. She's hurt her leg and keeps chewing it, and it's the same as last time basically. We'll have to give her pills and she will run a mile every time she sees me! I've had a cone-collar on her for about four days but took it off this afternoon and the chewing started. Silly thing - you'd think she'd learn!!! :

If they could talk I'm not sure I could tolerate them shouting THE DOOR, THE DOOR, THERE'S SOMEONE AT THE DOOR, QUICK, THE DOOR, THERE'S SOMEONE THERE, COME QUICK, THE DOOR, THE DOOR

She's cut it Maggy but I don't know how. I think the wound trying to heal must be itching and therefore bothering her. The vet think's it's compulsive licking rather than an infection or whatever, but I've still got to give her pills to help get rid of nasties. Great!!! :

Hope Popppy gets well soon, isnt there something non toxic but nasty tasting you can put on her fur to deter licking ?
Im thinking along the lines of oil of cloves for nail-biters? They did that to me when I was a nervous 10 yr old studying for 11 plus and it worked.

Actually the vet said there was a cream we could use, but if she's a compulsive licker she'd lick it off whether it tasted nasty or nice - that's the nature of cats.
I've been using "Stop and grow" on LP's fingers because she bites her nails, and so far it seems to be working. It didn't work on me when I was younger though - I just put up with the taste!!! I gave up years ago when I wanted to, not when M&D told me to!!!

I took Poppy to the vet AGAIN today. Not only is she still chewing on her leg (the vet says that cats enjoy the sensation!!!) but she was bitten by another animal, probably a cat, so needed to have that seen to as well. On a positive note though the vet said she was a very healthy animal, and that she looked 5 years old, rather than 15 years old (or whatever she is - I can't remember!)

I thought when animals licked their wounds it helped to heal them. She could probably have an antibiotic injection if you can,t get tablets down her my last little dog had impacted annal glands and was given an injection (I think) or that might of been for something else I cant remember. But I gave my puppy tablets when he had a stomache upset and rolled them up in a piece of beef! I dont think it even touched his tongue and it was gone.

I think it does help heal them Maggy but she keeps on licking so that the scab never gets to heal properly. The Vet said that they like the sensation of the licked nerve endings and therefore keep licking of the scab to feel the sensation again - gross!!! Anyway this time she's had a long lasting injection which will hopefully give the wound time to heal - she's had it for a long time now after all. We've started giving Poppy her tablets on raw chicken - she's suspicious but eats them ;D

Try the pill inside a piece of raw liver but only use small quantities of liver. If I remember correctly dogs can become addicted to liver or it is bad for them in large quantities. Its how I remember my mum medicating their dogs. If that failed, but you have to trust the dog for this, I'd grab the dog and squeeze their cheeks at the back of the jaw where the teeth meet so they 'have' to open their mouths. The cheeks go between their back teeth around your fingers so that cant really bite down without hurting themselves. Tilt their heads back and pop the pill in right to the back of the throat then let the jaws close and hold the mouth closed until they swallow. It sounds rough but it wasnt, I did this with a male alsation and a male shetland and most times it worked. As I said you'd have to trust the dog to do this.
