I've been trying to get onto GWD to post a query about bottle gardens and my pooter won't let me on.... I can get on the MB but when I try and click on the boards I want I just get a 'waiting for...' message...ggggrrrrrr. ANYWAY I don't seem to be having the same problems here so I've come here to play... I've oiked out my big green bottle that I got from a car boot sale about 100 years ago and I'm going to plant it up to give to one of my sisters...I read somewhere that you should but charcoal at the bottom before putting the compost in...does anyone know why? I haven't GOT any charcoal..... Cheers CPBxxx

Hello Cheery - and very welcome you are too.
I don't know for sure, but I suspect that the charcoal is to prevent the compost from going rancid. No drainage in a glass bottle. You could get some lumpwood barbecue charcoal and crush some of it up perhaps.

I've never bothered with charcoal in bottle gardens Cheery but it is to stop the soil going smelly - it's also recommended that you put charcoal in the water when you do hyacinths in water but I don't bother with that either!

Charcoal is supposed to keep the compost sweet

Right...I have been to a GC and got some charcoal...I made up the bottle garden but it doesn't look that good at the mo...I think I put too much compost in . Once I've fiddled with it I'll post a pic.

If you put a cotton reel on the end of a stick you can tamp the compo down with it, a dinner fork is a good tool too, used in the same way.... ;D

Hmmmm. I never heard of a bottle garden! Is that like the containers for the carnivorous plants like Venus Fly Traps and Sundews?
