I doubt if it would be possible to build a tunnel sadly - too expensive and , as I say, the road is the major route so I doubt if the county council would want to. Poor old toadies though...still some must get through as we always have lots of them in our garden in the summer.

I know, but if we do suffer a real drop in our frog population, maybe more will have to be done for our toads. Not sure, but I think a tunnel has been built somewhere, thought I saw it on a programme once. But then again it was quite a small road, if I remember correctly!

Fifteen randy little buggers hammering away at it this morning.
And a very big dollup of tapioca to-boot!

rumpy pumpy here today too. BTW it is my observation that they like to spawn in shallow water or on top of vegitation that will hold the spawn in the surface. From watching the hatchling tadpoles, who congragate on top of the spawn, I'd say this is to give the hatchlings a chance to gain strength before they enter the deeper water.

My little pond's got more spawn in it than water I think, and the show's not over by a long way. The spawn is all over the plant pots and every other nook and cranny too. Maybe this lot will indeed be more than a match for the slugs. Hi there Sean, nice to see you on here. Hoping for great things this year from the Iris seeds you gave me last year, if they can push their way up through the spawn, that is.

We have loads of spawn and activity at the moment, making the pond all cloudy. Under our trickly waterfall is a load of white foam, like detergent. Since we are sure that nobody's done anything to the pond, are we right to assume that all this is is not frog spawn but frog s p e r m?

You are probably right, as I believe frog sperm is a sort of protein, so yes it would foam a bit if there was a lot of it. I hope there are plenty of females about!!

Thanks Keith, I hope so too, as there's an awful lot of clinging going on.

Ooh, I wish I was allowed a pond (OH says too many little kids in the garden). All this "clinging" is fascinating...I do always end up feeling sorry for the ladies though......typical eh? Got any piccies anyone? (That sounds a bit dubious!!)...

We had a female frog last year who'd got a hernia which eventually killed her, acquired through all the mating, horrible to see. When I a) master Photobucket, b) get a good enough digital camera for close-up, ours is rubbish and c) the pond ever unclouds itself through all the activity, then I can post some pics.

I remmber the first time they have seen frogs and newts, it is so exciting for them. It teaches them about the dangers and they now teach this to other kids. Most 'accident' happen to kids that are not used to ponds, like a neighbour's or a relatives' pond. But I do apperciate caution. Keith

We spotted five clumps (?) of frogspawn in M&Ds natural pond but none in the ornamental pond. Would I be better off waiting and taking tadpoles home for our water garden, or can I just take some spawn?

The other day I lost count in the high 20's in the plant pond, I cant get close enough to the wild life pond before they dive. As a quite serious note, for anyone trying to get frogs to spawn, every year they use SHALLOW areas first. I am sure this is a deliberate act, it keeps the spawn in the surface and think it is because the hatchling tadpoles are then largely free from fish predation until the jelly has been consumed. I have at least 6sq ft of spawn in the plant pond (fishless) and all that I can see is laid on top of plants/pots which would leave it in 1 to 2 inches of water. The centre of the pond is 2ft deep and there isn't any spawn visible in the 'deep' water and when the frogs are quiet I can see the bottom of that and I think I could see spawn in there. I saw the first clumps of spawn in the wild life pond yesterday and again that was laid on top of plants in effectively shallow water
