Im on it Keith, but they submerge when the camera is out! I have moved some pots (the Zantedescia) to the side of the pond thats accessible to the cats..... for their protection, and it makes it hard for me to get close, too.

Don't know what they are SL. My guess is some sort of worm or leech. Are you sure it is them that is chomping the iris? You could try using this, I have just found! Still think worm or leech or maybe even a insect larva. Any chance of a close up? Keith

Looks a lot better now and the wildlife seem to think so too Water clarity has improved 100% but the water lily is pretty naff, not as good as last year and has only had one very short-lived flower. Anybody have any advice?

Could be the amount of rain we have been having. No flowers 'normally' means lily too deep or not enough sun, SL! The pond looks much better, though. Is the lily getting enough light through the oxygenating plant? Just a thought, as there looks to be a lot of it! Keith P.s. There is a thread on the Beeb boards with a poster suffering the same problems. www.bbc.co.uk/dna/mbgardening/F2759007?thread=4374930

Think I should pull out some of the oxygenator then? Ive already taken out half of it! Its what made the water clear up though isnt it?

Think I should pull out some of the oxygenator then? Ive already taken out half of it! Its what made the water clear up though isnt it? If the lily can 'see' through it and get through it, then it will be alright, but from experience of my Dad's old boss's pond, it can get too invasive for other plants, like lilies. Also, remember that pic of my pond in Oakham, where I was doing an experiment with Azolla, to deal with blanketweed in the first year of a new pond? When we went on holiday the lily was doing well and flowering great! After two weeks of being away the lily was half dead, due to the light being cut out because of the azolla. Slightly different I know, but with a few hours of hard work and two weeks later the lily was sending up flower heads again. That other pond? Same thing, I reduced the oxy plant and the lilies really grew well and covered quite a bit of the water and flowered well. I was only a teenager at the time and I was helping my Dad in the 'big' garden. I had not long been on my RSPCA course and this was my first 'project' so to speak. The fish responded to the clean up as well! If I remember correctly they bred the following year for the first time in a couple of years. I got a nice bit of extra pocket money as well!!! ;D I was about 14/15 at the time, You are the only person who can judge whether you need to take anymore out or not! Yes the oxygenating plant is helping greatly towards the clear water, but it is that balance that is needed. Don't forget 'oxygenating' plants consume oxygen at night! What lily is it, can't remember if you have mentioned this before? Keith

Found the book, and the label inside as I thought the Lily is called Rene Gerard ...and its too deep. I shall risk life and limb to bring it closer to the surface.

Lovely lily though, well I do like reddish ones! I did think that it was probably too deep, which is why I asked! Don't do your back in trying though! Have you got something to stand it on, in the pond? Depth should be about 18 inches, if I remember correctly! Keith

I have a shelf all the way around the inside of the pond and a pair of "litter pickers" (huge tweezer thingies) for moving things around....... Ill be ok doing it, dont worry.

Yeah, you are unlikely to see much of them again now until Spring - and it's orgy time again!

Yeah, you are unlikely to see much of them again now until Spring - and it's orgy time again! I see mine every day here!! I'm getting youngsters now practising, diving into the big pond, must take a piccy one day, or even a video! Two did it at the same time once, yesterday, probably because Stephen got too close!! Two days ago, I had an adult going about in between my plant pots and it was ~4pm. I also have a few in the 'container' along with the litle ones. When I topped up the container yesterday, I disturbed one that was hiding amongst the iris. It/they will be about, SL. You have so much cover they are likely to be under plants somewhere, if not in the pond. Keith
